    Hi Paula,

    Please try this:

    #1:

    1. Open Settings using Win + I, then go to Network & InternetAdvanced network settings
    2. Scroll down and click Network reset
    3. Click Reset now, then confirm
    4. The system will remove and reinstall all network adapters and reset components (Wi-Fi, Ethernet, VPN) to default
    5. Restart the PC when prompted (or manually within 5 minutes)

Error 0x800704cf when saving in Word typically indicates a problem accessing the location where the file is being saved (for example, a network or cloud location). The provided context covers closely related Word save failures and hangs; the supported steps focus on low disk space, paging file growth, and known add‑in or software conflicts.

    Use these supported steps:

    1. Free disk space and reduce paging file pressure
      1. Close other programs that are not needed so Windows can reduce paging file usage.
      2. Run Disk Cleanup to free space on the system drive:
        • Select StartPrograms (or All Programs in Windows XP) → AccessoriesSystem ToolsDisk Cleanup.
        • In Select Drive, choose the drive where Word is installed or where documents are saved (for example, **C:**) and select OK.
        • On the Disk Cleanup tab, select the file types to remove and select OK.
      3. After cleanup, try saving the document again, ideally first to a local folder such as Documents.
    2. Try an alternate save location
      • Save the document to a different location that is known to have free space and be accessible, for example:
        • A different local drive.
        • A removable disk with free space.
        • A network drive that is currently connected and online.
      • If saving to removable media (like a floppy disk in older environments), ensure the disk is not full and try a different disk if necessary.
    3. Check for third‑party software conflicts
      • If antivirus software is running, temporarily turn it off and then try saving again. If saving works with antivirus disabled, contact the antivirus vendor for an update or workaround.
      • If using Hewlett‑Packard Credential Manager for ProtectTools on a system with Word 2007, update it to version 1.00J or later, because incompatible versions can block saving and cause “insufficient rights” errors.
    4. If Word hangs or reports a generic error when saving
      • If Word stops responding or shows a generic error when saving (for example, “Word has encountered a problem and needs to close”), use Save As to save with a new file name and/or to a different location, especially if working with mail‑merge or web‑folder documents.

If the problem persists after freeing disk space, changing save location, and checking antivirus/HP ProtectTools, run an Office Online Repair from Windows Installed apps to repair Word and related components, then test saving again.
