All of my Office 2021 for Mac programs stopped functioning, were deactivated by Microsoft a while back. This was a non-subscription purchase through the Apple Store when I bought my Mac. I activated the programs and all worked fine, until....I got a notice that I needed to re-activate my Office programs. they stopped working. I no longer have the Microsoft Office information (product key, etc) that came with the program. I do not know how to reactivate or contact Microsoft for help. It seems they want to be difficult to contact. Any help would be,....helpful.

What is the exact product name? Office Home & Business 2021? Office Professional 2021? Or something else?

    Hello Duane Inlow!

From what you described, your Office 2021 for Mac were previously activated and working normally after purchase but are now prompting for reactivation and have stopped functioning. Since you no longer have access to the original product key, you’re unsure how to restore or reactivate your license.

As a first step, please try the suggestions provided by Q&A Assist.

For further assistance, here's how to reach out to Support Team (live chat):

    Go to: https://support.microsoft.com/home/contact

    1. In the search box, enter a short description of your issue, for example: Reactivate one-time purchase Office for Mac
    2. Hit "Get Help"
    3. You can try the suggested solution shown in the screenshot below or scroll down and select Sign in to contact support for further assistance (please sign in using a personal Microsoft account). Then follow the on-screen prompts to reach Support Team.

Tip: Support Team availability can vary, and retrying at a different time often helps.

For a one-time-purchase Office 2021 for Mac that suddenly shows as deactivated and no longer works, the supported path is to reinstall and then reactivate it using the Microsoft account that holds the license.

Follow these steps on the Mac:

    1. Uninstall the current Office apps
Remove the existing (non-working) Office installation so it does not conflict with a clean reinstall:
      1. Close Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
      2. Open FinderApplications.
      3. Locate Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook, then Control‑click and choose Move to Trash.
      4. Empty the Trash.
    2. Reinstall Office 2021 for Mac
Since this is a perpetual (non‑subscription) license, install the Office for Mac apps directly from Microsoft rather than the Mac App Store: After the download completes, open the .pkg installer and complete the installation.
    3. Reactivate Office
Reactivation for a perpetual Office 2021 license is done by installing and then activating again:
      • If the license is associated with a Microsoft account, sign in with that account when prompted in any Office app after reinstall.
      • If activation issues persist (for example, Office says it is activated but still prompts to activate):
        1. Quit all Office apps (e.g., WordQuit Word).
        2. Reopen one Office app and check if the message is gone.
        3. If the prompts continue, reset credentials and license files:
          • Open Spotlight → search for Keychain → open it.
          • Search for Office and delete the data license file.
          • Then run the license removal tool and restart an Office app to sign in/activate again.
    4. If activation still fails

If the original purchase was correctly tied to a Microsoft account, reinstallation plus sign‑in with that same account is the supported way to restore activation even if the original product key card is no longer available.
