To stop paying for the extra Microsoft Defender family plan while keeping Microsoft 365 (and its included Defender), cancel only the separate Defender subscription and then check if a refund is available.
Follow these steps:
- Go to the Services page for the Microsoft account that was used to buy the Defender family plan:
https://account.microsoft.com/services
Sign in with the same Microsoft account that purchased the Defender family subscription. - Find the separate Defender (family) subscription in the list and select Manage.
- If you see Turn on recurring billing instead of Manage, that subscription is already set to expire on the date shown and will not renew; no further action is needed for cancellation.
- On the subscription details page, select Cancel (or Upgrade or Cancel, depending on what is shown).
- Scroll through and follow the on‑screen instructions to complete cancellation.
This cancels only that specific subscription and does not affect the Microsoft 365 subscription that already includes Defender. - Refund eligibility:
- To check if the Defender family subscription is eligible for a refund, it must be canceled first.
- After cancellation, refund handling follows the Microsoft Store Terms of Sale and the country‑specific rules. In some countries (for example, Canada, Israel, Korea, Turkey, and in certain cases Denmark, Finland, Germany, Netherlands, Poland, and Portugal), prorated refunds may apply depending on subscription length and renewal status. See the guidance under Countries with prorated refunds for Microsoft subscriptions in the referenced article.
If the Defender family plan was purchased through Google Play or the Apple App Store rather than directly from Microsoft, cancellation and any refund must be requested through the respective store (Google Play or Apple) instead of the Microsoft account portal.
Canceling this separate Defender family subscription will not cancel or change the existing Microsoft 365 subscription; Microsoft 365 (and its included Defender benefits) will continue as long as that subscription remains active.
