To play sound from external speakers instead of the laptop on Windows 11, follow these steps in order:
- Connect and check the speakers
- Make sure the speakers are powered on.
- Verify all cables are firmly plugged in:
- If using the 3.5 mm audio jack, ensure it is in the correct output jack (often green or labeled “headphone”/“out”).
- If using USB or HDMI, ensure the cable is fully seated and try another port if possible.
- If headphones are plugged in, unplug them, as some systems disable speakers when headphones are connected.
- Select the correct output device from the taskbar
- Select the Speakers icon on the taskbar.
- Select the arrow to the right of the volume slider (tooltip: Select a sound output).
- In the list of audio devices, click the external speakers so they become the active output.
- Test audio again.
- Set the speakers as the default output in Settings
- Select Start > Settings > System > Sound.
- Under Output, select the external speakers you want to use. Selecting them here sets them as the default output device.
- Confirm the volume for that device is turned up and not muted.
- Check audio hardware and volume controls
- Confirm all cords and cables are plugged in securely.
- If the speakers have their own volume knob or mute button, make sure they are not muted and the volume is turned up.
- If using USB speakers, try a different USB port.
If sound still does not play from the speakers after these steps, continue with the additional troubleshooting in the Windows audio article, such as turning off audio enhancements, running the audio troubleshooter, and updating/reinstalling audio drivers.
