I am trying to get my speakers reconnected to my computer so that sound plays from them and not my laptop.

To play sound from external speakers instead of the laptop on Windows 11, follow these steps in order:

    1. Connect and check the speakers
    • Make sure the speakers are powered on.
    • Verify all cables are firmly plugged in:
      • If using the 3.5 mm audio jack, ensure it is in the correct output jack (often green or labeled “headphone”/“out”).
      • If using USB or HDMI, ensure the cable is fully seated and try another port if possible.
    • If headphones are plugged in, unplug them, as some systems disable speakers when headphones are connected.
    1. Select the correct output device from the taskbar
    2. Select the Speakers icon on the taskbar.
    3. Select the arrow to the right of the volume slider (tooltip: Select a sound output).
    4. In the list of audio devices, click the external speakers so they become the active output.
    5. Test audio again.
    6. Set the speakers as the default output in Settings
    7. Select Start > Settings > System > Sound.
    8. Under Output, select the external speakers you want to use. Selecting them here sets them as the default output device.
    9. Confirm the volume for that device is turned up and not muted.
    10. Check audio hardware and volume controls
    11. Confirm all cords and cables are plugged in securely.
    12. If the speakers have their own volume knob or mute button, make sure they are not muted and the volume is turned up.
    13. If using USB speakers, try a different USB port.

If sound still does not play from the speakers after these steps, continue with the additional troubleshooting in the Windows audio article, such as turning off audio enhancements, running the audio troubleshooter, and updating/reinstalling audio drivers.

    Hi there,

    Thank you for posting this.

I understand you want audio to play from your external speakers instead of the laptop speakers, so to narrow this down can you confirm how the speakers are connected (USB, 3.5mm jack, Bluetooth) and whether they appear in Sound settings, and as a quick fix please right‑click the volume icon, open Sound settings, set the speakers as the default output device, ensure they are not muted or disabled, reconnect or re-pair them, restart the PC, and update or reinstall the audio drivers if they still don’t show or produce sound.
