My document said it saved but it didn't and I can only find the top part. The other that I had just added is not on my document. I looked under file and info for an option saying recover unsaved document and it's not there. I couldn't find any option anywhere that said recover unsaved document. I looked under version history and the final draft was not there..I looked in recycling bin and trash and not there either. Where can I find my finished document? Second part, in my files folder the name of my document is there the first letter of the name is J. There are 3 blue lines coming up from the left top side of the J. I have a Pic and tried Google image search and came up with nothing. Can someone please tell me what that means?

    Hi, Jordan ✔

On a Chromebook, this kind of loss usually means Word saved to a different copy or location than the one you reopened. Also, Microsoft version history only works for files stored in OneDrive or SharePoint, so if the file was being edited from local Chromebook storage or another app location, the newer draft may not show there.

Here are some suggestions you can try:

In the Chromebook Files app, search the document name and sort by Modified. Check Recent, Downloads, Play files, and Google Drive/My Drive. It is recommended that you also search just one uncommon word from the filename, in case Word made a second copy.

Open OneDrive on the web and check Recent, not just the folder you normally use. Sometimes the newest copy shows there even when the older folder copy is still missing the latest edits.

In Word, open the Recent list and reopen the file from there instead of from Files. That can sometimes point to the exact copy Word last edited.

About the J icon with the blue lines, I can’t identify that one with certainty from text alone. It is recommended that you right-click the file and check Details/Info for the file type and location. If it points to Google Drive or opens in the browser, treat it like a cloud-linked item or shortcut, not the actual Word file.

Thank you for your patience in reading, I hope this information has been helpful to you.

On a Chromebook, Word is typically used through Word for the web (via OneDrive) or the Android app, so recovery options are more limited than on the full desktop version.

For the missing text in the document:

    1. Open the document again in Word.
    2. Use File > Info > Version history (if available) to see if any earlier or autosaved versions contain the full text. If the final draft is not listed there, there is no additional version stored in the service.
    3. Because the Manage Document > Recover Unsaved Documents command is not present in the environment being used, the desktop-only AutoRecover-based methods from Windows or Mac do not apply. If the text is not in version history, Recycle Bin/Trash, or any backup location, there is no supported way in Word to reconstruct the missing portion.

For the icon with the “J” and three blue lines:

    • The context only documents that different formats and platforms can affect whether Word can open or recover a file, and that some icons indicate different file types or app states. It does not define an icon with a letter and three blue lines, so its exact meaning cannot be determined from the available information.
