A family of Microsoft word processing software products for creating web, email, and print documents.
Hi, Jordan ✔
On a Chromebook, this kind of loss usually means Word saved to a different copy or location than the one you reopened. Also, Microsoft version history only works for files stored in OneDrive or SharePoint, so if the file was being edited from local Chromebook storage or another app location, the newer draft may not show there.
Here are some suggestions you can try:
In the Chromebook Files app, search the document name and sort by Modified. Check Recent, Downloads, Play files, and Google Drive/My Drive. It is recommended that you also search just one uncommon word from the filename, in case Word made a second copy.
Open OneDrive on the web and check Recent, not just the folder you normally use. Sometimes the newest copy shows there even when the older folder copy is still missing the latest edits.
In Word, open the Recent list and reopen the file from there instead of from Files. That can sometimes point to the exact copy Word last edited.
About the J icon with the blue lines, I can’t identify that one with certainty from text alone. It is recommended that you right-click the file and check Details/Info for the file type and location. If it points to Google Drive or opens in the browser, treat it like a cloud-linked item or shortcut, not the actual Word file.
