OS upgrade MS 11 Home and MS 11 Ent Pro to Education license

Question

I have laptops for the school that mostly have Windows 11 Enterprise/Pro and are activated through MS Entra/Intune for education. We have a Microsoft 365 A3 faculty license (30). I have Students laptops I am trying to build and have run into 6 laptops that have MS 11 Home licenses. I have put a temp license on 4 of the 6 of Windows 11 Pro and they are not activating. How do a Get a temp license for them to activate to an Education license. Our subscription is active.

For student devices that currently have Windows 11 Home, and an active Microsoft 365 A3 faculty subscription in an Education tenant, there are two supported upgrade paths to Windows Education depending on how the licenses were acquired.

1. For CSP (Cloud Solution Provider) Education customers

• If the school’s Microsoft 365 A3 licenses were purchased through a CSP under a Microsoft Customer Agreement, the CSP partner can request upgrade keys for Windows 11 Home devices.
• Required conditions:
  • Customer qualifies as academic.
  • Active Microsoft 365 A1/A3/A5 or Windows 11 Enterprise A3/A5 subscriptions.
• Process:
  1. A partner admin (Admin agent or Billing admin) signs into the Microsoft 365 admin / Partner Center portal.
  2. Submit a support request on behalf of the customer to upgrade Windows 11 Home devices.
  3. Microsoft Support validates eligibility and, if approved, provides Windows 11 Pro Education product keys.
  4. Install the Windows 11 Pro Education key on each Home device.
  5. Join the device to the school’s Microsoft Entra ID tenant.
  6. Once joined, the device automatically upgrades to Windows 11 Education (subscription) via subscription activation.
  Notes:
  • If more keys are needed later, another support request can be submitted, as long as the total number of keys across all requests does not exceed the total active A1/A3/A5 or Windows 11 Enterprise A3/A5 licenses.
  • Eligibility to request and use these upgrade keys ends if the subscription is not renewed.

2. For Volume Licensing (VLSC) / Education subscription customers

• If the school’s Windows Education rights come from Volume Licensing (for example, EES/OVS-ES/School) and the tenant has a Windows Education subscription that includes the student use benefit, use MAK keys from VLSC or the Microsoft 365 Admin Center.
• For student-owned or institution-owned devices running Windows Home:
  • Recommended methods:
    • Use MDM (such as Microsoft Intune) with a Windows 10/11 Education MAK from VLSC to push an Edition Upgrade policy to Windows Home devices, or
    • Use a provisioning package with the Education MAK at first boot.
  • In Intune, configure a Windows Edition Upgrade policy:
    1. Set Edition to upgrade to Windows 10/11 Education.
    2. Enter the Windows 10/11 Education MAK key from VLSC.
    3. Assign the policy to the group of Windows Home devices (for example, using a filter on Sku Family = Home).

3. Subscription activation requirements for Education

• For subscription-based upgrades to Windows Education (no imaging):
  • Device must be running Windows Pro Education with a digital license (not a converted Pro → Pro Education image).
  • Tenant must have an active subscription to Microsoft 365 with a Windows Enterprise license, or a Windows Enterprise/Education subscription.
  • Devices must be Microsoft Entra joined or hybrid joined (workgroup or Entra-registered only are not supported).
• If a device was converted from Windows Pro to Pro Education (not originally Pro Education), subscription activation will not work; it must be reimaged to Pro Education or directly to Windows Education.

4. Addressing the current non-activating “temp” Pro installs

• Generic or temporary Pro keys will not grant Education rights or subscription activation.
• Replace those temporary Pro keys with either:
  • The CSP-provided Windows 11 Pro Education keys (if using CSP path), then Entra-join for automatic Education subscription activation, or
  • A Windows 10/11 Education MAK from VLSC via Intune/provisioning package (if using VLSC path).

In summary, to get valid activation and upgrade to Education, obtain proper Pro Education or Education keys either via a CSP support request (for CSP A3) or via VLSC MAK (for Volume Licensing), then use Intune/MDM or direct key entry plus Entra join to complete the upgrade.
