To reset access to an Outlook (Microsoft) account when old passwords are forgotten and there is little email history, use the standard Microsoft account password reset and, if needed, the account recovery form with as much other information as possible.
- Start password reset
- Go to the Microsoft account sign-in page.
- On the Enter password screen, select Forgotten your password?.
- Or use the Reset password entry point described in the article and enter the Outlook email address, then select Next.
- Follow the prompts to receive a verification code using any phone number, alternate email, or other security info on the account.
- Verify identity
- Choose one of the available methods to receive a verification code (text, email, etc.) and enter the code.
- If no verification options are available or accessible, use the sign-in helper tools linked from the reset article to continue recovery.
- If normal reset does not work, use the account recovery form
- When recovery options are not available or codes cannot be received, use the Microsoft account recovery form (linked from the guidance in the context).
- Before filling it out, gather as much information as possible about how the account has been used:
- Any old passwords that might have been used (even partial guesses can help).
- Details of Microsoft services used with this account (for example, Outlook.com sign-in history, even if only for receiving mail).
- For Outlook.com/Hotmail accounts, information about contacts and email subject lines is requested. If there are few or no sent emails, focus on any messages that were received (for example, newsletters, service confirmations) and use exact subject lines where possible.
- Answer every question on the form as completely as possible. Wrong answers do not count against the request, but more accurate detail increases the chance of success.
- If the account has two-step verification
- If two-step verification is enabled, at least one security method (phone, alternate email, or authenticator) must be available to complete sign-in or recovery.
- The recovery form cannot bypass two-step verification; if all security methods are lost or replaced, and the form is unsuccessful, there is no additional manual override.
- If locked out after many attempts
- If too many reset or recovery attempts have been made, the account may be temporarily locked. Wait the required lockout period (typically about 24 hours) before trying again, and then submit a carefully prepared recovery form from a familiar device and network.
If the password reset and recovery form both fail after providing maximum accurate information, there is no additional supported method to regain access to that Outlook/Microsoft account.
