Looking to update my bios. And made my recovery USB. Aaaaannnddd…. Zero bit locker key.

Yes I know already. Blah blah every search do a bit locker key is “it’s saved on your account” “written down or printed” “no we can’t get your hard drive unencrypted “”the guy that did your install has it in his email” <—— that is ridiculously ridiculous.

I don’t care about that, above stuff. How do I get a new key? That’s my question.

HOW DO I GET NEW BIT LOCKER KEY?

<off topic removed>

to get a new key …. I buy new processors or new windows which one?

BECAUSE DOING A FACTOY RESET WILL NOT GIVE YOU A, NOR REISSUE A LOCKED DRIVE, BIT LOCKR KEY.

i will say it again, how do i get a new bit locker key?

    Hello,

On Windows 11, the drive is not encrypted automatically unless the device meets the hardware requirements and you sign in with a Microsoft account during setup.

When you sign in with a Microsoft account, Windows completes the encryption process and automatically backs up the BitLocker recovery key to that account.

Because Windows 11 requires an internet connection and Microsoft account sign‑in during initial setup, supported Home and Pro devices will normally become encrypted.

A new recovery key can only be generated after the drive has been successfully unlocked. If you decrypt the drive and then turn BitLocker on again, a new recovery key will be created.

If the current recovery key cannot be obtained, the only available option is to fully erase the drive and reinstall Windows using the method recommended by your computer manufacturer. This is important because using the manufacturer’s method ensures that your warranty is not affected.

A new BitLocker recovery key can only be created after the drive is already unlocked. It cannot be generated to replace a missing key for a still-locked drive.

    BitLocker works like this:

    • The drive is encrypted.
    • One or more “protectors” are created (TPM, PIN, startup key, recovery key).
    • The 48-digit recovery key is one of those protectors. If it is lost and the drive is in recovery mode, there is no supported way to decrypt or “re-key” that locked volume without the existing recovery key (or a configured Data Recovery Agent, which is an enterprise feature).

    From the provided documentation:

    • If BitLocker detects an unauthorized access or hardware/firmware change and asks for the recovery key, and the key is not available from any of the usual locations (Microsoft account, printout, file, Entra ID/AD DS, USB, etc.), access to that encrypted data cannot be restored.
    • Microsoft support cannot generate or retrieve a new key for an already-locked drive.

    To answer the core question:

    • A “new BitLocker key” for the current encrypted drive cannot be obtained if the existing recovery key is lost and the drive is in recovery.
    • The only way forward in that situation is to wipe/reinstall (delete all partitions and clean-install Windows) or restore from a backup. That creates a fresh Windows installation, on which BitLocker can then be turned on again, generating a new recovery key that must be backed up.

Once on a working, unlocked system in the future, new keys/protectors can be created or rotated (for example, adding new protectors or rotating recovery passwords as described in the BitLocker operations and recovery guidance), but that always requires the drive to be currently accessible.
