Window Security blocks hyperlinks in New Outlook and Adding iCloud email account

Hi All,

In the past year some update has changed my Windows Security setting. I cannot click a hyper link in outlook (new) and have the link open in Edge. I receive a Windows Security Action Block message. And a second pop-up that says Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file.

This was annoying, but I simply copied the link, went to Edge pasted and went on with life.

Tonight I had to re-add my iCloud email, and received a similar Windows Security pop-up message, while there was various manage account dialog windows open. I cannot figure out how to add my email (it used to work).

Any ideas how to get basic stuff working.. or do I simply disable all the security and buy another product?

I'm on Windows 11 Home 25H2. Many thanks!

    Hi Ben R,

Thank you for reaching out. Based on the behavior you described (hyperlinks in Outlook (new) being blocked and similar pop‑ups appearing when trying to add your iCloud account), this may be related to how Windows Security features are interacting with the newer Outlook app experience.

In some environments, Windows Defender protection settings (such as Attack Surface Reduction or App Control) can prevent Outlook (new) from launching external processes like:

    • opening web links in your default browser, or
    • starting authentication windows needed to add third‑party accounts (e.g. iCloud)

Here are some possible checking steps and workarounds that you can try in this situation:

1, Confirm default browser link associations

    • Go to Settings > Apps > Default apps
    • Ensure the following are assigned to Microsoft Edge:
      • HTTP
      • HTTPS
      • .html
      • .htm
    • Restart Outlook after making any changes and test again.

2, Review Outlook (new) Junk Email security setting

    • In Outlook (new): Settings > Mail > Junk email
    • Uncheck: Block attachments, pictures, and links from anyone not in my Safe senders and domains list
    • Save changes and test hyperlink behavior.

    3, Test in Classic Outlook

If available, switch back temporarily to Classic Outlook and:

    • click an email hyperlink
    • try adding the iCloud account there

If these actions work in Classic Outlook but not in Outlook (new), it may indicate a security rule is limiting how Outlook (new) launches browser or sign‑in components.

4, Allow Outlook (new) through security protection

    • Instead of disabling Windows Security globally, you may consider allowing the Outlook (new) executable: HxOutlook.exe

I hope these steps help restore normal link handling and account setup in Outlook.

    Hello,

Before turning things off let us figure out what exactly is stepping on New Outlook.

Open the Windows Security app and head into Protection history. Then go click a link in Outlook so the error pops up, and look at the newest item in that protection history list. Let me know exactly what it says blocked it. Usually it will mention something specific like Controlled Folder Access or SmartScreen.

Once we know what feature is throwing the fit we can actually fix it.

For links and account actions being blocked in Outlook on Windows 11, start with Outlook-specific link settings, then check Windows security prompts rather than disabling security globally.

    For links in New Outlook:

    1. In New Outlook, go to Settings > Mail > Junk email.
    2. Under Security options, clear (uncheck) Block attachments, pictures, and links from anyone not in my Safe senders and domains list.
    3. Select Save.
    4. Test opening a hyperlink again.

If using classic Outlook anywhere in the process (for example, when adding accounts or viewing some messages):

    1. Check whether the message is in plain text. Plain-text messages may not show active links.
    2. If an InfoBar appears at the top of the message saying that links or external content are disabled, select the button in that InfoBar to enable external content for that message.

For Windows Security “action blocked” style prompts when opening links or managing accounts, the behavior can also be related to Outlook’s hyperlink protections added in recent security updates:

    1. Recent Outlook security updates can cause warnings or blocking when opening certain links (for example, FQDN or IP-based links) and show messages like “Something unexpected went wrong with this URL”.
    2. If a registry-based policy is in place to show hyperlink warnings, it can be disabled by setting the following value (typically done by an administrator or via policy):
      • Key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\policies\microsoft\office\16.0\common\security
      • Value name: DisableHyperlinkWarning (DWORD)
      • Value data: 1

Changing registry values and security policies should be done carefully, as it reduces protection against malicious links. If the prompts appear to be coming from Windows Security rather than Outlook itself, and basic Outlook settings do not resolve the issue, involve support to review the exact Windows Security configuration rather than turning protections off entirely.

Once links open correctly, retry adding the iCloud account in Outlook; the same underlying block that affected hyperlinks may have been preventing the account dialogs from launching or completing.
