I recently spoke to Microsoft support about retrieving a compromised account (******@gmail.com) there was nothing they could do, but they told me to speak to Microsoft support about suspending the account for me.

Hi, I'm John! I will help you with this.

To permanently close or suspend a Microsoft account, you normally need access to it. Since the account is already compromised, it cannot be recovered by any means.

In this case, no further action is required on your end, as it is essentially lost.

    What you can do instead:

    1. Inform your contacts that the account is compromised
    2. Ask them to ignore any messages coming from it

I really hope this information is helpful! Let me know if you have any further questions or concerns.

    Regards,

    John J.D.

To permanently stop use of a hacked Outlook.com/Microsoft account, the supported path is to close the associated Microsoft account. However, closing requires the ability to sign in, so if the account is fully compromised and recovery is not possible, Microsoft Support cannot forcibly close or suspend it on request.

Use these options based on the current situation:

    1. If sign-in is still possible
      • Go to the Outlook.com account and follow the documented process to close it. Closing the Outlook.com email requires closing the entire Microsoft account.
      • Be aware that closing the Microsoft account permanently deletes email, contacts, and access to all Microsoft services tied to that account (Xbox, OneDrive, Skype, BitLocker recovery keys, etc.).
      • Use the Close your account flow described here: Close your Outlook.com account.
    2. If sign-in is no longer possible (account fully compromised)
      • First, attempt recovery using the hacked/compromised account flow and the account recovery form. This is the only supported way to regain control so the account can then be closed.
      • Start with the hacked-account helper: How to recover a hacked or compromised Microsoft account.
      • If the attacker has changed the email, phone, and security info and the automated recovery repeatedly fails, moderators and support documentation indicate the account may be unrecoverable and there is no alternative manual override.
    3. If the account is locked or suspended by Microsoft
      • Accounts can be locked when Microsoft detects violations (malware, phishing, spam, etc.). In those cases, Microsoft may already be restricting use of the account under the Microsoft Services Agreement.
      • Details on why accounts are locked are documented here: Microsoft account has been locked.
    4. If additional help is needed
      • For hacked accounts where recovery is failing, use the official support entry points referenced in the hacked-account article to contact Microsoft Support. Community forums and moderators cannot suspend or close accounts; they can only direct to the official recovery and support flows.

In summary, permanent suspension in practice is achieved by either:

    • Regaining access and closing the Microsoft account, or
    • Relying on Microsoft’s automated systems to lock or restrict the account when it violates policies, if recovery is impossible.
