Open related email from search result, not just the attachment.

I was searching for details of a specific task that I knew my team had completed about a year ago. The search brought up the related attachments but clearly the phrase I searched was not included in the main body of the email.

Neither hovering over these results, nor right-clicking yielded any further options besides just opening the attachment on its own with ZERO mention of which email the attachment was included with.

In the end, I searched my emails for the dates shown on the attachments, but there surely must be an easier way to open the related email from the actual search results??1000048123

    Hi @Recalcitra,

Thank you for taking the time to describe your experience in detail.

When search results surface only attachments without any reference to the parent email, locating the original message can be challenging.

To help isolate and work around this behavior, please try the steps below:

1/ Check Outlook on the web

If you’re seeing this behavior in the new Outlook for Windows, please try searching in Outlook on the web https://outlook.cloud.microsoft/ to see whether the same results occur. This can help determine whether the issue is client‑specific.

2/ Clear browser cache (Outlook on the web only)

If attachment‑only results appear in Outlook on the web, the issue may be related to the browser session.

    • Sign out of https://outlook.cloud.microsoft/
    • Clear the browser cache and cookies for outlook.office.com and office.com
    • Close and reopen the browser
    • Sign back in and retry the search

3/ Sign out and sign back in

Refreshing the Outlook session can also help.

    • Click the Settings (gear) icon in the top right
    • Go to Accounts > Email accounts
    • Select Manage next to your account
    • Choose Sign out (or Remove for Outlook on the web)
    • Close and reopen Outlook (or refresh the browser)
    • Sign back in and test again

    4/ Repair Microsoft Office (Windows)

If search indexing fails to rebuild or behaves inconsistently, the Office installation may need repair.

    Run a Quick Repair:

    • Close all Office applications
    • Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps (Windows 11) or Apps & features (Windows 10)
    • Locate Microsoft 365 or Microsoft Office
    • Select Modify
    • Choose Quick Repair and complete the process
    • Reopen Outlook and allow indexing to complete

Run an Online Repair (if needed):

    • Repeat the steps above and select Online Repair instead
    • This reinstalls Office components and may take 15–30 minutes
    • Outlook will reindex afterward; please leave it open until completed.

5/ Verify the Windows Search service

    • Press Windows + R, type services.msc, and press Enter
    • Locate Windows Search
    • Set Startup type to Automatic (Delayed Start)
    • Start the service if it isn’t already running.

Temporary workaround: Switch back to classic Outlook:

If search behavior in the new Outlook is blocking your workflow, you can temporarily switch back to classic Outlook by turning off the Try the new Outlook toggle in the top right. This is not a permanent fix, but it can help restore expected search behavior in the meantime.

Please try the above steps and let me know if the issue persists. If needed, we can continue working together to determine the best next steps.

New Outlook’s search results for attachments do not provide a command to open or jump directly to the parent email. When an attachment result is opened from the search pane, only the file is opened; the message it belongs to is not exposed from that view.

To get to the related email, the supported approach is to search mail items instead of attachment items, for example by:

    1. Using the main Search box in Mail and searching by subject, sender, or date range (for example, the “Sent by” date shown on the attachment result).
    2. Refining the search with filters such as From, To, Subject, Keywords, Date from, and Attachments so that the result list shows the messages themselves rather than only the files.

There is currently no easier built‑in method in New Outlook for Windows to open the parent email directly from an attachment‑only search result.
