    Hi Gerald B. Chow

I understand you are having a problem with Outlook for iOS showing “connection to the server failed” and you can still access the mailbox on your laptop. Please confirm which account type is this (Outlook.com/Hotmail, Gmail/Yahoo, Microsoft 365 work/school, or on‑prem Exchange), and does the same error happen on both Wi‑Fi and cellular?

I would love to hear from you soon. Have a nice day!

The error indicates Outlook on iOS cannot successfully connect to the mail server, even though the mailbox still works on the laptop. Based on the context, the most likely causes and actions are:

    1. Verify server address and credentials on the iPhone
      • In Outlook for iOS, open the account settings for this mailbox.
      • Confirm the Mail Server (incoming and, if configured, outgoing) address is correct.
      • Re‑enter the username and password, then save and retry.
      • If unsure of the correct server name, username, or password, contact the mail‑server administrator or email service provider.
    2. Check for TLS/SSL or certificate issues on the server
      • If the server is using deprecated TLS 1.0 or 1.1, or an expired TLS certificate, Outlook for iOS will block the connection even though other clients (like a laptop) may still work.
      • An Exchange or server administrator must ensure the server and OS are configured to use TLS 1.2 or later and that the TLS/SSL certificate is valid and not expired.
    3. Ask the email administrator to verify server availability and configuration
      • The error can occur if the email service is misconfigured or the server is not responding correctly to mobile connections.
      • An IT administrator should verify that the Exchange or mail server is available externally and correctly configured for mobile clients.

If the configuration and TLS settings are corrected on the server side, Outlook for iOS should resume syncing and the “connection to the server failed” error should stop.
