Cannot Use Headset's Microphone on Windows 11 PC

Hi,

I've been trying to connect my headset to my Windows 11 PC. I can hear audio through them, but cannot use the microphone. The PC does not register the Headset as an input device, and I can't seem to get it to register it as one. I've uninstalled and reinstalled many of my audio drivers, as well as download all the recommended drivers and required drivers from the PC manufacturer's website. I also tried with different headsets to see if that worked but the other models were not registering as input devices either. I was able to get all the headsets I tried to register as audio output devices however. All the headsets I tested used a jack connection to the PC (with single jack connections). The PC itself is a desktop PC - specifically a Dell PC, model XPS 8950.

I'm completely lost about what to do - so any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Hi,

    What is the headset model?

Are you using a USB or jack connection?

If it's a laptop or desktop, if possible, could you provide the laptop model or your desktop configuration?

    Thanks

Since audio output works but the headset microphone is not detected as an input device, focus on Windows 11 microphone permissions, default input selection, and driver detection.

    1. Confirm apps can use the microphone
      1. Select Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone.
      2. Make sure Microphone access is turned On.
      3. Turn Let apps access your microphone On, and enable access for the apps that need the mic.
      4. If using desktop apps, ensure Let desktop apps access your microphone is turned On.
    2. Make the headset the default input and test it
      1. Select Start > Settings > System > Sound.
      2. Under Input, check Choose a device for speaking or recording.
      3. If the headset appears, select it.
      4. Select the > next to the device to open its properties.
      5. Under Microphone test, select Start test and speak into the mic, then Stop test and Play the Recorded sample to confirm it works.
    3. Run the Recording Audio troubleshooter
      1. Go to Settings > System > Sound.
      2. Scroll down to Advanced and choose Input devices under Troubleshoot common sound problems.
      3. Follow the wizard and apply any fixes it suggests.
    4. Update or reinstall audio drivers Since driver reinstalls were already attempted, ensure they are refreshed correctly:
      1. Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
      2. Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
      3. Right-click the audio device (for example, the sound card or audio codec) and select Update driver > Search automatically for drivers.
      4. If issues persist, right-click the audio device again and select Uninstall device.
      5. If available, check Attempt to remove the driver for this device, then select Uninstall.
      6. Restart the PC so Windows reinstalls the audio driver automatically.
    5. If the headset mic still does not appear as an input device
      • Verify the headset is connected correctly and fully inserted.
      • If it is a Bluetooth headset, ensure it is paired and connected as a headset (not just as an audio output) and then repeat steps 2 and 3.
      • If no input device appears at all for the headset after these steps, the issue may be hardware-related (headset mic or PC jack) and may require testing with another device or contacting the PC/headset manufacturer.
