How do I move a Windows 11 Pro License to a new system?

Bought and activated a new Windows 11 License on an Intel NUC. 2 Weeks later the hardware died. I moved the SSD to a new NUC (same model and config) and I need to activate the license on the new system. Re-entering the key returns an error that it is not valid or that the system does not have internet access. running the wmic command to show the license key returns a blank but i was able to find and confirm the registry entry for the purchased key.

Thanks!

    Welcome Vicer,

Thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A forum.

I understand that after a hardware replacement, especially involving the motherboard, Windows may no longer recognize the device as the same system it was previously activated on. This happens because Windows activation is tied to the device’s hardware configuration.

In addition to Q&A Assist, try this step-by-step approach:

    • Go to Settings > System > Activation
    • Select Troubleshoot
    • Choose I changed hardware on this device recently
    • Sign in with the Microsoft account previously used to activate Windows
    • Select the device that was previously activated
    • Check This is the device I’m using right now
    • Click Activate

If Windows is still not activated after completing these steps, please contact Microsoft Support for further assistance:

    • Visit the Microsoft Support contact page: Contact - Microsoft Support
    • In the search bar provided on the page, type "Activation" and press Enter.
    • Click on the "Get Help" button that appears.
    • Scroll down the page until you see and click on the "Contact Support" option.
    • When prompted to select your product or service, choose "Other Products".
    • For the category, choose "Windows".
    • Look for and click on "Chat with a support agent in your web browser".
    • When prompted, provide a valid contact email where Microsoft can reach you regarding your case.
    • Explain your situation clearly: Be concise but provide all the relevant details.

A support representative can help verify your license and complete activation on the new hardware, if eligible.

If you need any assistance while following these steps, feel free to let me know—I am happy to help

    Hi,

what is the exact name of your purchase? Could it be this was not a license but a cheap product key?

    Microsoft warns at https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/howtotell/Shop.aspx

Beware of Product Keys Sold Separately With the exception of Product Key Cards (PKC’s) distributed with COA’s, Microsoft does not distribute products keys as standalone products. If you see a listing on an auction site, online classified ad, or other online page advertising product keys for sale, it’s a good indication that the keys are likely stolen or counterfeit. If you were to purchase and use a stolen or counterfeit product key to activate Windows installed on your PC, the key may not work for activation, may already be in use on another PC, or it might be blocked from use later by Microsoft when the key is reported stolen.

Because the hardware (motherboard) changed, Windows now sees this as a different device and the original activation is tied to the failed NUC’s hardware. How to proceed depends on what kind of license was purchased and how it was activated.

    1. Check activation and edition on the new NUC
      • Select Start > Settings > System > Activation.
      • Confirm the edition is Windows 11 Pro (must match the edition the key is for).
    2. Try reactivating with the product key
      • In Settings > System > Activation, select Change product key.
      • Enter the purchased Windows 11 Pro key again.
      • If activation still fails with a key/connection error, ensure the device has working internet access and try again.
    3. If the license is a digital license linked to a Microsoft account
      • Sign in on the new NUC with the same Microsoft account that was used on the original NUC.
      • Go to Settings > System > Activation.
      • If Windows shows as not activated, select Troubleshoot.
      • When the troubleshooter shows Windows can’t be activated on your device, choose I changed hardware on this device recently.
      • Sign in with the same Microsoft account, select the device that corresponds to the license, check This is the device I’m using right now, then select Activate.
    4. If there is no digital license and only a product key
      • Use Settings > System > Activation > Change product key and enter the same key that was used to activate the original NUC.
      • If activation errors persist, use the guidance in Get help with Windows activation errors to match the exact error code and follow the recommended resolution path.
    5. If neither digital license nor product key will activate
      • If the original license was OEM/preinstalled on the first NUC, it may be bound to that hardware and not transferable; in that case a new license may be required.
      • If it was a retail license purchased from Microsoft and cannot be reactivated via the troubleshooter or product key, use the phone activation path described in the activation error help to have the license reassigned to the new hardware.
