- BitLocker availability on Windows Home BitLocker Drive Encryption is not available on Windows Home edition. It is only available on Windows Pro, Enterprise, or Education editions. If “Manage BitLocker” does not appear when searching from Start, the edition does not support BitLocker.
- Alternative on Windows Home: Device Encryption On many modern devices running Windows 10/11 Home, Device Encryption is available instead of full BitLocker management:
- Device Encryption uses BitLocker technology to automatically encrypt the operating system drive and fixed drives.
- It can be available on a wider range of devices, including those running Windows Home, if the hardware meets the requirements (such as TPM and Secure Boot) and the feature is enabled by the OEM.
To check and enable it:
- Sign in with an administrator account.
- Open Settings → Privacy & security → Device encryption (or use the
ms-settings:deviceencryptionshortcut). - If the Device encryption page is present, turn the toggle On.
- If Device encryption does not appear, it is either unavailable on that device or the account is not an administrator.
When Device Encryption is turned on during setup with a Microsoft account or work/school account, the BitLocker recovery key is automatically backed up to that account.
- Upgrading to Windows Pro to use BitLocker
To use full BitLocker Drive Encryption management (for example, via Control Panel → Manage BitLocker, or using
Enable-BitLocker/manage-bde.exe), upgrading the edition to Windows Pro, Enterprise, or Education is required. On a supported edition, BitLocker can then be enabled on the OS drive and other drives using the documented methods.
