Hi Jose I
I understand how frustrating this is. Replacing the motherboard causes Windows to treat the PC as a new device, which requires reactivation.
Please first confirm your license type:
- Open Command Prompt (Admin) and run:
slmgr /dli - If it shows Retail, the license is transferable after a hardware change.
- If it shows OEM, the license is permanently tied to the original motherboard and cannot be reused.
If your license is Retail, you should not need to purchase Windows again. Automated phone/chat activation often fails after motherboard replacement. The correct step is to contact Microsoft Support and request escalation to a live agent, explaining that:
- Windows 11 Pro was previously activated
- The motherboard was replaced due to failure
- You are reactivating the same Retail license on the same user’s PC
The message suggesting you “purchase a more current version” is generic and does not mean your license is invalid.
No reinstall or data loss is required. Hope you'll get this sorted out.
