What does Markdown mean in Microsoft Help pages

It is a new concept to me in Microsoft Answers and I cannot see explained or understand what actually changes/happens when I check/click the link.

    Markdown on the Q&A forum allows people to format their text by typing symbols rather than using the menu at the top of the text editor so they do not need to use their mouse.

    Type some text into Q&A, then make some text bold, italics, a code block... etc. then turn on the markdown switch and you will see the characters used to specify the text formatting.
