We recently upgraded our church's software from Word 2013 to Microsoft Office 365. I typically insert pdf files that cannot be altered or edited into our bulletins which are Word docs. Microsoft Office 365 will not allow me to do this. I was instructed to convert my pdf files to a high-resolution image using Microsoft Powertoys. How do I do this? Step by step instructions please.

    Hi Deborah Mumford,

    Thank you for reaching out.

You can include a PDF’s contents in your Word 365 bulletin by converting the PDF page to an image first and then inserting that image into Word. Windows 11 already includes tools that make this quick to convert the PDF to a high‑resolution image

1, Open the PDF - Double‑click the PDF so it opens in Microsoft Edge or another PDF viewer.

2, Zoom in for better quality - Press Ctrl + + until the page fills most of the screen.

3, Capture the page - Press Windows key + Shift + S to open Snipping Tool.

4, Select Rectangular Snip, click and drag to capture the PDF page.

5, Save as an image - Click the preview notification that appears.

6, In Snipping Tool, select Save and choose PNG for best quality.

7, Insert into Word - Open your Word document.

    • Go to Insert > Pictures > This Device.
    • Select the saved PNG image and insert it.

The PDF content will now appear in your bulletin as an image, which keeps the layout intact and prevents editing. If you regularly work with PDFs in Word documents, this approach provides a reliable way to preserve formatting while still allowing you to place the content exactly where you need it.

You can easily do this online. For example, here is Adobe's Free PDF to JPEG Converter. You could also purchase a converter, but I wouldn't go to the expense unless this something you plan to do frequently. These 'converters' simply take a picture of the opened PDF, which you can do yourself. If you have a scanner, you can also scan the printed PDF to an image format. To alter or edit an image file, you'll need an image editing app like Windows's own Paint app.

I would like to suggest that you experiment with Paint to see if it gives you the results you are looking for.

Microsoft PowerToys is not covered in the provided material, and the context does not include steps for converting PDF files to images with it.

However, the context does describe supported ways to work with PDFs and Word in Microsoft 365:

    1. To edit or reuse content from a PDF in Word, open the PDF directly in Word so it is converted to a Word document, then save again as PDF if needed.
      • In Word: go to File > Open, browse to the PDF, open it, accept the conversion prompt, make changes, then save as Word or PDF.
      • Details are in the guidance on editing a PDF in Word.
    2. To add a PDF into a Word document (desktop Word on Windows):
      • In Word, place the cursor where the PDF should appear.
      • Select Insert > Object in the Text group.
      • Choose Create from File > Browse.
      • Select the .pdf file and choose Open (or Insert), then OK.
      • This inserts the PDF as an object in the document.
    3. If only some text from the PDF is needed, copy and paste from the PDF into Word. This usually brings in plain text without formatting.
    4. If the PDF needs editing and was originally created in an Office app (for example, Word or Excel), the recommended method is to edit the original Office file and then save or convert it to PDF again using the built-in PDF export:
      • In Word: File > Export > Create PDF/XPS Document > Create PDF/XPS, choose a location, adjust Options if needed, then Publish.

These are the supported approaches in the context for working with PDFs and Word in Microsoft 365; converting PDFs to high‑resolution images with PowerToys is not documented here.
