A cloud-based identity and access management service for securing user authentication and resource access
Error code 53003 indicates a sign-in or access issue with the account or tenant being used to accept ownership of the Azure subscription.
Use these steps to troubleshoot and regain access to the “Accept Ownership” link:
- Verify the correct directory and account
- In the Azure portal, select the account icon in the upper-right corner.
- Select Switch directory and choose the directory/tenant that owns the subscription you are trying to accept.
- Ensure that the account used is the correct work or school account, not a personal Microsoft account, especially if both share the same email address.
- Clear cached sign-ins and try a clean browser session
- Sign out of all Microsoft accounts in the browser.
- Clear cookies and site data:
- Edge: Settings → Privacy and Services → Clear browsing data (select Browsing history, Download history, Cookies, Cached images and files).
- Chrome: Settings → Privacy and Security → Clear browsing data.
- Close all browser windows.
- Open a new InPrivate/Incognito window and try the “Accept Ownership” link again.
- Ensure sufficient permissions in the correct directory
- If the correct directory is selected but the error persists, the account may not have sufficient permissions.
- The account accepting ownership typically needs to be added as Owner on the subscription or have appropriate billing/role-based access.
- Ask an existing Subscription Owner or Billing Owner to assign the Owner role to the account using the Azure portal role assignment process.
- If no subscriptions are visible after sign-in
- After fixing the sign-in, if the portal shows “No subscriptions found”, verify again that the correct directory is selected.
- If the directory is correct and there is still no access, have the account added as an Owner on the subscription and then retry the ownership acceptance link.
- If the issue persists
- If the subscription was originally created under a Microsoft Customer Agreement and the original billing owner left the organization, ensure that the ownership email and banner in the subscription details are being used from an account with valid billing and directory access.
- If access is still blocked after the above steps, create a support request from Azure support channels so the Azure team can review tenant/account flags or access issues related to the ownership transfer.
