Windows Update issue - Error code 0x8024a105

I'm trying to install the latest Windows updates, using Settings > Update as usual. After I try to check for updates, though, I see this error message:

"There were some problems installing updates, but we'll try again later. If you keep seeing this and want to search the web or contact support for information, this may help: (0x8024a105)"

I used the in-program Help window, but saw an error there as well. How can I download these updates and bypass this error/code, starting with 0x? Thanks in advance.

    Hello rgconover,

I'm John an Independent Advisor and a Microsoft user like you. I want to apologize if you encountered this issue. I understand you're having trouble with failed windows updates. What is your Windows edition and version? Press Start then search Settings, select System then About.

    **Run the Windows Update Troubleshooter

Windows 10: Select Start > Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot, then select Windows Update under Get up and running, and then select Run the troubleshooter.

**Make sure Windows Update and Background Intelligent Transfer services are available and running.

Click Start, type services.msc in the Start Search text area, and then click services.msc in the programs list. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.

    Double-click Background Intelligent Transfer Service.

If the Startup status lists Stopped, click Start and then click OK. If the status is Running, click Restart

    Double-click Windows Update.

If the Startup status lists Stopped, click Start and then click OK. If the status is Running, click Restart

    Double-click Workstation.

If the Startup status lists Stopped, click Start and then click OK. If the status is Running, click Restart

Close the Services window and try to install updates again.

    **Rename Software Distribution folders

Note: Before trying to rename the folders, please disconnect in the internet first or Turn on Airplane mode then restart your computer.

From Start , search for cmd

Select Command Prompt (with the option Run as Administrator) from the results

At the Command Prompt, type the following commands one at a time. After each, select Enter. Let the command complete before typing the next command.

    net stop wuauserv

    net stop cryptsvc

    net stop bits

    net stop msiserver

    ren %systemroot%\softwaredistribution softwaredistribution.bak

    ren %systemroot%\system32\catroot2 catroot2.bak

    net start wuauserv

    net start cryptSvc

    net start bits

    net start msiserver

After all these commands are completed, close the Command Prompt window and restart your computer.

Please try again to run the Windows Update.

I hope this helps! Please let me know if you have any further concerns.

    Sincerely

    John DeV

Thanks for your response. When I went to the About window, I saw the info below. Is this the info you're looking for?

Running the Windows Update Troubleshooter did not fix the issue.

When I looked at Windows Update and Background Intelligent Transfer service, I saw the info below. No Restart option was available for any of the three options you mentioned before. Should I go ahead and try to Rename Software Distribution folders as you suggested, or troubleshoot these items first? Thanks in advance.

    Hello rgconover,

Thank you for updating me that information. On the upper left on the services you can see Stop and Restart. Please check my attached Image.

If it doesn't work, Please try to proceed in renaming the Software Distribution folders

If still doesn't work, Please try to Perform a Repair Install of Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade. It will definitely help in resolving update errors. Performing this can repair broken operating system files while preserving your personal files, settings and installed applications. The in-place upgrade will also bring you the latest Windows update.

**Few things to check on the PC

Important: Back up your personal data and files to an external hard drive, USB thumb drive, or cloud location (such as OneDrive) before you begin any reinstall of Windows 10 just in case something went wrong.

Ensure you are signed in or have administrator rights to do a repair install

Unplug all external peripherals except for the Mouse, Keyboard, and LAN cable before starting

Disable or uninstall any 3rd party Anti-Virus program to prevent it from interfering with the upgrade

Please NOTE: You don't need to follow the instructions to turn off Secure Boot
