My outlook account is temporarily restricted – I received an email asking me to verify my account within 24 hours to avoid permanent closure but I missed the email and don’t feel comfortable clicking on the link. I am receiving some emails but not from Xero. How do I fix this?

Hello James. You said your account is restricted, did you receive any email from Microsoft or a warning? What exactly happens when you try to sign in?

Try this using an incognito window:

    1. Open your browser (Chrome, Edge, etc.)
    2. Open an incognito/private window
      • Press Ctrl + Shift + N (Chrome/Edge)
      • Or click the three dots (top right) → New Incognito / Private window
    3. In that window, go to: https://account.microsoft.com
    4. Try signing in with your Microsoft account
    5. Complete any verification steps if prompted (code, Authenticator, etc.)

Note: If in doubt, don’t click any external links from emails you don’t recognize.

Follow these steps to restore normal mail flow and address the “temporarily restricted” situation:

    1. Check if the account is blocked or restricted
    • Outlook.com accounts can be temporarily blocked after unusual sign-in activity.
    • Use the Sign-in Helper to unblock the account: go to the Sign-in Helper and follow the prompts to verify identity and remove any temporary block.
    • If unblocking fails, use the guidance in When you can't sign in to your Microsoft account (linked from the unblock article) to reset the password and reach support if needed.
    1. Verify storage is not full
    • If Microsoft cloud storage (Outlook.com mailbox + OneDrive) is full, Outlook.com will stop receiving email and senders (including Xero) will get bounces.
    • Check mailbox storage using the storage link in Can't send or receive email in Outlook.com and delete or archive items if storage is full. Messages sent while storage was full are bounced and unrecoverable, but new mail will arrive once space is freed.
    1. Treat the “verify within 24 hours or closure” email as suspicious
    • Messages that threaten imminent closure and push to click a link are often phishing. Only trust account messages that come from official Microsoft domains (for example, as noted in similar cases, legitimate account notices use domains ending in @accountprotection.microsoft.com).
    • Do not click links in that email. Instead, manage the account only by going directly to Outlook.com or the Microsoft account page in a browser and signing in there.
    1. Fix general “can’t receive” issues (including from Xero)
    • After confirming the account is unblocked and storage is not full, follow the Outlook.com receive-troubleshooting steps:
      • Make sure the account password is current and that sign-in works normally.
      • If only some senders (like Xero) are affected, check rules, filters, and junk mail settings in Outlook.com to ensure messages are not being moved or deleted.
      • If an error such as “The recipient server did not accept our requests to connect” appears for this address, update the Outlook.com email address/alias as described in Add or remove an email alias in Outlook.com (linked from the receive-troubleshooting section).
    1. If issues persist
    • Use the interactive troubleshooter linked under Can't send or receive email in Outlook.com (the Start link) to step through targeted checks.
    • If still not receiving from Xero after unblocking the account and confirming storage and rules, use the Outlook.com in-product HelpStill need help? path to contact support, as described in the same article.

This combination—unblocking the account via Sign-in Helper, confirming storage, ignoring suspicious links, and running the Outlook.com receive-mail troubleshooting—addresses both the temporary restriction and missing messages from specific senders like Xero.
