Microsoft 365 Copilot currently supports only specific Word-related file types, and Word template formats such as .dotx and .dotm are not listed among them.
For Microsoft 365 Copilot (work or school), the supported document formats are:
- .docx, .doc, .docm, .pdf, .txt, .rtf, .md, .html, .htm for creating documents
- .docx, .doc, .pdf, .pptx, .ppsm for creating presentations
- .docx, .doc, .pptx, .pdf, html., .loop, .md for summarizing information
For Copilot in Microsoft 365 Personal, Family, and Premium, Word-related support is:
- .docx, .doc, .pdf, .txt, .rtf, .html, .htm when working with documents in Word
Template formats such as .dotx are not included in these supported lists, which explains why providing a .dotx file to Copilot fails in practice.
To complete the exercise described in the Learn module with current capabilities:
- Create or open the response template in Word as usual.
- Save or export the content as a supported format, typically .docx.
- Use the resulting .docx file with Microsoft 365 Copilot.
This aligns the training exercise with the actual supported file types. The product documentation supports the recommendation to clarify in the module that templates must be provided to Copilot as .docx (or another listed supported format) unless Copilot is updated in the future to accept .dotx directly.
