- Allowing “remember me on this device” and similar cookies
"Remember me" and reduced sign-in prompts (including fewer MFA prompts) are controlled by the website or service being used, not by Windows itself. To allow this behavior:
- Stay signed in when prompted by the site or app (for example, check "Remember me" or "Stay signed in" when offered).
- Allow that site’s cookies in the browser. If browser settings are too strict (blocking all cookies or all third‑party cookies), the site may not be able to remember the device.
- Use a modern browser such as Microsoft Edge, which supports secure sign-in features and integrates with Microsoft Defender SmartScreen for safer browsing.
Even with “remember me” enabled, some services will still require two-factor authentication periodically or when something looks risky (new location, new device, or unusual activity). That behavior is by design for security and cannot be fully disabled from Windows.
Using passkeys and Microsoft Authenticator where supported can also reduce password and MFA friction while staying secure. Passkeys are phish-resistant credentials stored securely on the device and unlocked with face, fingerprint, or PIN, and Microsoft Authenticator lets accounts be accessed without passwords using fingerprint, face recognition, or a PIN.
- Whether Norton or McAfee are needed with Windows Defender
On Windows 10 and Windows 11, Windows Security (which includes Microsoft Defender Antivirus and related protections) is built in and provides real-time malware detection, prevention, and removal with cloud-delivered protection. For most home users, this built-in protection is sufficient when combined with:
- Keeping all software up to date (Windows Update and other apps)
- Using Microsoft Defender SmartScreen in Microsoft Edge to help block malicious sites and downloads
- Avoiding suspicious attachments, links, and untrusted downloads
- Using a firewall (Windows includes one and turns it on by default)
Because Windows Security already provides integrated antivirus and other protections, additional third‑party antivirus products like Norton or McAfee are generally not required for baseline protection. Running multiple real-time antivirus products in parallel is not recommended, as it can cause conflicts and performance issues.
For Microsoft 365 Family or Personal subscribers, Microsoft Defender is also available to help protect multiple devices (Windows, Mac, Android, iOS) at no extra charge.
