How to fix 0x7ffffffff

When I attempt to do a Windows Update I receive an error message stating Sorry! Something went wrong. The error code given is: 0x7ffffffff

I understand how frustrating it can be when you are receiving the error code 0x7ffffffff when attempting to install Windows Update on your Windows Home device. 

To help identify the fastest resolution, please confirm the following:  

• Which Windows version are you currently running (Windows 10 or Windows 11, and the version number if available)? 

In the meantime, you can try the workaround steps below to troubleshoot the issue:  

Option 1: Restart the Windows Update services 

• Press Windows + R, type services.msc, and press Enter 
• Restart Windows Update and Background Intelligent Transfer Service 
• Close the window and try Windows Update again 

Option 2: Run the Windows Update troubleshooter 

• Open Settings > System > Troubleshoot 
• Select Other troubleshooters 
• Run Windows Update 

Option 3: Reset Windows Update components 

• Open Command Prompt as administrator from the Start menu 
• Run the following commands one by one:  
  • net stop wuauserv 
  • net stop bits 
  • net stop cryptsvc 
  • Restart the PC and check for updates again
