Sound Output Issue After Update

Hi there,

I updated my Microsoft Surface Laptop Go 3 with the April 2026 update. Afterwards, the fingerprint scanner and audio output stopped working. The fingerprint scanner has had issues like this after an update before, and when that happened I uninstalled the driver, restarted my laptop, and it came back. This has not been the same with the audio.

I have done everything you can think of to try and fix this. I have uninstalled the audio driver, reinstalled it, updated it, run the audio troubleshooting feature and let that update the audio driver, none of that has worked. I have restarted numerous times, tried to uninstall the updates, and reinstall the updates as well. I can hear a fuzzy sound, like the audio driver is trying to play the audio, but that is it. The sound can be all the way up and I won't hear anything other than a quiet, fuzzy static.

I am at the point where I'm convinced I broke it when I updated it. I haven't even had this laptop for a year yet. Please help.

    Hi Danica Brooksbank,

I understand how frustrating it is to lose sounds from your Surface, especially when the device is still quite new and the issue appeared immediately after a Windows update. Given what you’ve already tried, I admit there aren’t many things I can suggest here, but it’s worth trying out if you haven’t yet:

    1 - Use the Surface built-in tools

2 - Force your Surface to restart

    • Select Start > Power > Shut down > let your Surface fully shut down.
    • Wait for 10 seconds > press and hold the power button for 20 seconds.
    • If you see the logo appear during that, continue to hold for the full 20 seconds.

3 - Manually install the specific Surface drivers and firmwares

    • Visit: Download drivers and firmware for Surface Go | Microsoft Support
      • Select your model (Surface Go 3) > go to the official website.
      • Choose your language > click Download the package.
    • Fully shut down the Surface > disconnect all external devices:
      • USB devices, hubs, headphones, mouse…
      • Leave only its charger, plugged to the wall outlet.
    • Restart your Surface and install the downloaded firmware package.

4 - Reinstallation repair (keeping files and apps)

Disclaimer: Both Windows reinstallation and in-place upgrade will refresh your Windows files and operating system without removing files or applications. That being said, we always recommend that if you have important data, you should back it up first before making large system changes.

If the issue persists even after a repair install, you may consider a warranty repair, especially if the device is new.
