    Hello Rianie De Wet,

I'm sorry the restrictions are getting in the way of your classes. To point you in the right direction, a couple of quick questions would help:

    • Is the account you're using a child account in a Microsoft Family group (set up by a parent or guardian), a school account given to you by your school, or both?
    • When you try to join a class or open the browser, what exactly does the message say? A screenshot would be useful if you can share one.
    • Which app or site is blocked — Teams, Edge, a specific website?

In general, there are two common possibilities:

    • If this is a child account in a Microsoft Family group, age and content limits (including which sites the browser allows) are set by the family organizer at family.microsoft.com. They would need to adjust the content filters or approve specific sites/apps for you.
    • If this is a school account, age and safety policies in Teams for Education are set by your school's IT admin. In that case, your teacher or the school IT team would need to review the settings.

Once you share the details, I can give you a more specific next step.

Age-related restrictions and safety policies in Microsoft Teams for Education are controlled by the school’s IT admin, not by the student.

For students, there are two common limitations that can block joining classes or using chat:

    1. Supervised or restricted chat/meeting policies
      • Schools can enable supervised chat so that an educator must be present in every student chat.
      • Students with restricted permissions cannot start chats with other restricted/limited users and may see errors when trying to create or join certain chats or meetings.
      • Only educators and school staff can be chat supervisors; students cannot change these settings.
    2. General Teams for Education access issues
      • Many permissions (who can join meetings, create or join class teams, etc.) are set by the institution’s IT admin.
      • If Teams is not working properly on the device (desktop app problems, etc.), try:
        1. Closing and reopening the Teams app.
        2. Using another platform (for example, going to https://teams.microsoft.com in a browser and signing in).
        3. Making sure the Teams app is updated, or uninstalling and reinstalling it.

Because age and safety restrictions are enforced by the school/organization, the only way to change them is:

    1. Contact the school’s IT admin or teacher and explain that the current restrictions prevent joining classes.
    2. Ask them to review the Teams for Education policies on the account and adjust them if appropriate so that classes can be joined while still keeping student safety controls.

If problems continue even after the admin checks settings, use the Help → Report a problem option in Teams so the issue can be reported as an education user.
