    Hello @CYN Admin,

Thank you for reaching out and for sharing the details so far.

To better understand the issue and provide the most accurate guidance, I’ll need to collect a bit more information about the user’s setup and the behavior being observed on the device.

1/ Could you please confirm which Microsoft 365 license is currently assigned to the affected user? As part of troubleshooting, it would also be helpful to know whether you have already tried resetting the license assignment by removing the license from the user and then assigning it again via the Microsoft 365 Admin Center. This step often refreshes the activation state on the backend. You can find reference steps here: Assign or unassign licenses for users in the Microsoft 365 admin center - Microsoft 365 admin | Mic…

2/ Does the issue affect only Office desktop applications such as Word or Excel, or does it also occur in other apps like Outlook or Microsoft Teams on the desktop. Clarifying whether this is limited to Office apps or impacts multiple Microsoft 365 desktop apps will help narrow down whether the problem is app‑specific or device‑related.

Additionally, has the user already tried repairing the Office installation on the device. A repair can resolve issues related to corrupted files or incomplete updates. For reference, Microsoft provides guidance here: Repair an Office application - Microsoft Support

3/ If the user is seeing any specific error messages or unusual behavior when signing in to Office on the desktop, could you please share a brief description or a screenshot if possible. That information would be very helpful in identifying the root cause.

Please understand that our initial response does not always resolve the issue immediately. However, with your help and more detailed information, we can work together to find a solution.

Once we have these details, I’ll be in a much better position to understand what’s happening and advise on the next appropriate steps.

    Kind regards,

To restore access to Microsoft 365 desktop apps when online sign-in works but desktop sign-in fails, follow these steps for the affected user on the Windows device.

    1. Confirm the correct account and subscription
    • Ensure the user signs in with the same work/school account that works in the browser.
    • Verify that this account has an active Microsoft 365 subscription that includes desktop apps.
    1. Sign out and sign in again in Office desktop
    • Open any Office app (Word, Excel, etc.).
    • Go to the account/profile area and sign out of all accounts.
    • Close all Office apps.
    • Reopen an Office app and select Sign in.
    • Enter the user’s work or school email and password, then select Next.

(Desktop sign-in steps are aligned with the general Office sign-in flow described in the “Video: Sign in to Office” article.)

    1. Check for known sign-in errors
    • If the user sees “Something went wrong [1001]” when signing in to desktop apps:
      • Reboot the device and try again.
      • If the issue persists, run the WAM repair PowerShell commands from the article “Error ‘Something Went Wrong [1001]’ signing in to Microsoft 365 Desktop Applications” (these repair the AAD.BrokerPlugin and CloudExperienceHost components used for authentication).
      • If security software is installed, be aware it can interfere with the WAM plug-in; follow the mitigation guidance in the linked article.
    1. If the issue continues
    • For persistent error [1001], the tenant admin should open a support ticket from the Microsoft 365 Admin Portal and include MSOAID logs as described in Use MSOAID for authentication issues (linked from the error article). This helps Microsoft 365 support investigate authentication problems specific to that device/tenant.
    1. Alternative: use web apps while troubleshooting
    • The user can continue to access apps via the browser:
      • Go to www.microsoft365.com and select Sign In.
      • Sign in with the same work or school account.
      • Use the app launcher to open Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc., in the browser while desktop sign-in is being fixed.
