As the title says, my OneNote notebook will not synch anymore. When I open the web version of OneNote, it doesn't show my new files since the last synch. The error code is different for every file, but a lot of them have this one: E000006E 4pfvq

Can anyone help?

    Hello @Nur K

From what you’ve described, your OneNote desktop application has stopped communicating with the cloud. Specifically:

    • Changes made locally are not appearing in the OneNote Web version.
    • You are seeing the error code E000006E 4pfvq across multiple files or sections.
    • The connection seems to have been severed around March.

I have noted that other users are encountering the same issue, and I would like to suggest the following troubleshooting steps. However, to prevent data loss, you must back up your unsynced data first:

Backup Your Unsynced Notes (Priority #1)

Before attempting any repairs, we must ensure you do not lose the work you have done since March. Do not sign out or close the notebook yet, as doing so will delete the local cache of your unsynced changes.

    • Manual Copy: Open OneNote Online (onenote.com) in your browser. Manually copy the content from your desktop app and paste it into the web version or a separate Word document.
    • Export Section: If you are using the Desktop version, go to File > Export > Section and save it as a .one file to your local hard drive.
    • Print to PDF: For a quick visual backup, go to File > Print and select Microsoft Print to PDF for your most critical pages.

    Update OneNote

In similar cases, some users have reported that they fixed the issue simply by updating their OneNote version. Could you please confirm if you are using the OneNote app on a laptop? If so, please try updating OneNote after you have successfully backed up your files to see if the problem is resolved. User's image

Error E000006E is not listed in the provided OneNote sync error documentation, but the behavior described (desktop has newer content, web does not) matches a general sync failure between the local client and the cloud copy. The following supported steps can help isolate and resolve sync issues of this type:

    1. Verify account authentication
      • In OneNote, look for any sync error banner near the top of the app window.
      • Click the sync error message to refresh the session. If prompted, sign in with the same Microsoft 365 or work/school account that owns the notebook.
      • Ensure the account used in OneNote matches the account used in OneNote for the web.
    2. Confirm permissions and notebook availability
      • Open a browser and go to https://www.onenote.com and sign in with the same account.
      • Check whether the notebook appears and opens in OneNote for the web.
      • If it opens, then in the browser go to https://www.onedrive.com, navigate to the folder where the notebook is stored, and open it from there to confirm it still exists and is accessible.
    3. Check for network or server issues
      • If the notebook is stored on OneDrive, SharePoint, or a network share, confirm that location is reachable.
      • In OneNote desktop, try a manual sync (Shift+F9 or use the Sync Now button in the Notebook Sync Status dialog).
      • If syncing to SharePoint or a local network share, verify with the SharePoint/IT administrator that the server is online and the notebook has not been deleted or moved.
    4. Update OneNote to a supported build
      • If using OneNote 2013 or 2016, install all available Office updates so the client is not blocked by an unsupported build:
        • Close OneNote.
        • Use Control Panel > System & Security > Windows Update and install all Office updates, or in OneNote go to File > Account > Update Options > Update Now.
      • On Windows 10 OneNote app, open the Microsoft Store, search for OneNote, and apply any available updates.
    5. Check for account/password changes
      • If the account password was changed recently, re-enter credentials in OneNote when prompted.
      • Remove any extra or incorrect accounts from OneNote and add back only the correct one, then reopen the notebook from OneDrive/SharePoint.

If, after these steps, the notebook still will not sync and the error persists only for this notebook while others sync normally, open the notebook in OneNote for the web, confirm the latest server copy, and consider moving or recreating the affected notebook in a new cloud location (via File > Share > Move Notebook) so that a fresh sync relationship is established.
