I understand how confusing this is, especially when the new alias shows in your account but can’t be set as primary.
Could you let me know if you already tried the Q&A Assist suggestions? If yes, what happened?
Just to narrow this down properly, could you also confirm: Is the alias you’re trying to make primary a Microsoft address (@outlook.com / @hotmail.com), or a non‑Microsoft email?
In the meantime, please try these additional checks:
1, Confirm the alias status
- Go to Manage how you sign in to your account
- Check if the new email is listed as a verified alias (not just added but fully confirmed)
2, Check if the alias is already used elsewhere
- An email cannot be set as primary if it’s already associated with another Microsoft account (even previously)
- This is a common reason for the “try again later” message
Official reference: Add or remove an email alias in Outlook.com
3, Wait + sign out fully
- Alias changes can take time to propagate across services
- Sign out from all sessions, then sign back in at Microsoft account and try again
4, Try from a clean session
- Use an InPrivate/Incognito browser and go directly to: Manage how you sign in to your account
- This helps rule out cached alias data (since you mentioned trying credential manager already)
Please feel free to let me know how it goes. I truly appreciate your time and understanding.
