If the Outlook.com/Microsoft account cannot be accessed because the email is inactive and the credentials are unknown, it cannot be manually deleted. Microsoft accounts are automatically closed after a period of inactivity.
For consumer Microsoft accounts (including Outlook.com/Hotmail/Live/MSN):
- Outlook.com and OneDrive become frozen after 1 year of inactivity, and email and files are deleted shortly after.
- The Microsoft account itself expires and is permanently closed after 2 years of inactivity. After that, the account and its data cannot be recovered.
If the issue is ongoing charges on that old account and there is no way to sign in:
- Cancel any related subscriptions through the bank or card issuer (for example, by blocking or disputing recurring charges), since Microsoft cannot cancel subscriptions without verifying account ownership.
If the account is for someone who has died or is incapacitated and credentials are not available, the same rules apply: the account will close automatically after 2 years of inactivity. Any subscriptions should be stopped via the bank or card issuer.
To proactively close an Outlook.com account when sign-in is still possible, the account owner must follow the normal Microsoft account closure process described in Close your Outlook.com account.
