I just realized that I'm billed for both Microsoft 365 Personal and Basic subscription for months (possibly years). Can I get a refund?

I just realized that I have been double billed for the 365 Personal and 365 Basic subscriptions.

My 365 Personal subscription is directly billed through the microsoft website, while the 365 Basic subscription is billed through google play. I only have one Microsoft account

I just realized, when I checked my second email, there has been a recurring billing for Microsoft 365 Basic subscription since June 2022 all the way to last month, March 2026. Meanwhile I transitioned from basic to personal in June 2024 (and also changed my payment method). It seems that I still get billed for the basic subscription since June 2024 through my previous payment method.

Will I be able to get a refund?

On the link below are the steps to check your eligibility for a refund and to cancel the Microsoft 365 basic subscription, and while managing your account, you should also remove the recurring billing on the subscription you do not need.

Regarding a refund, you may be able to get a refund for the latest payment, but you would not get a refund for the last two years that the two subscriptions have overlapped.

Refund handling depends on where each subscription was purchased and local refund rules.

    1. Microsoft 365 Personal (billed directly by Microsoft)
    • To check refund eligibility, the subscription must be canceled first.
    • Sign in with the Microsoft account that was used to buy Microsoft 365 Personal and cancel it:
      1. Go to https://account.microsoft.com/services/microsoft365 and sign in with the account that purchased the subscription.
      2. Find the Microsoft 365 Personal subscription and select Manage.
      3. Select Cancel (or Upgrade or Cancel) and follow the on‑screen steps.
    • Not all cancellations result in a refund. Eligibility depends on Microsoft’s subscription refund and cancellation policies and, in some countries, on prorated-refund rules. For example, in certain countries (such as Canada, Israel, Korea, Turkey, and some EU countries for specific subscription lengths), canceling may entitle to a prorated refund. Details are in the prorated-refunds article linked from the refund page.
    • If the charge is not recognized or is believed to be incorrect, use the refund/self-help flow on the refund page to investigate the charge and request a refund if available.
    1. Microsoft 365 Basic (billed through Google Play)
    • Subscriptions purchased through a third party (Google Play, Apple, Amazon, Best Buy, etc.) must be managed and refunded by that retailer.
    • Microsoft cannot cancel, turn recurring billing on/off, or issue refunds for subscriptions purchased via Google Play because Microsoft did not receive those payments.
    • For the Microsoft 365 Basic subscription billed through Google Play:
      • Cancel and request a refund directly via Google Play using their refund policies: see Learn about Google Play refund policies.
    1. Practical next steps
    • For Microsoft 365 Personal (direct from Microsoft):
      • Sign in to the Microsoft account services page, cancel if still active, then follow the refund guidance in How to get a refund on a Microsoft subscription.
      • If the self-service flow does not offer a refund option for the historical charges, contact Microsoft Support via the Contact Microsoft Support link on the refund page and explain the overlapping subscriptions and dates.
    • For Microsoft 365 Basic (via Google Play):
      • Use Google Play’s support/refund process and provide the history of overlapping billing with the Microsoft 365 Personal subscription.

Whether a refund will be granted for past months/years is determined by Microsoft’s and Google Play’s respective refund policies and local consumer/refund regulations. The documented process is to cancel first, then check eligibility and, if needed, escalate through the appropriate support channels (Microsoft for direct purchases, Google Play for Play Store purchases).
