Based on what you described, your photos were uploaded to OneDrive and can still be seen under Files, but when you try to view them through the Photos/Gallery section, you receive a “something went wrong with the connection” message instead.
First, please check the Service Health Status, in case there is a temporary OneDrive service issue affecting your region.
You could also try signing out of OneDrive on the web and then signing back in, opening OneDrive in an InPrivate/Incognito window or in a different browser, and temporarily disabling any VPN or proxy if you are using one. If needed, you can also temporarily turn off browser extensions, as they can sometimes affect how websites load.
