A Microsoft app for iOS and Android devices that enables authentication with two-factor verification, phone sign-in, and code generation
Urgent: Unable to Access Microsoft Authenticator – Blocking Account Logins
Dear Microsoft Support Team,
I am facing a critical issue with the Microsoft Authenticator app on my device (Oppo K13), which is preventing me from accessing all accounts linked to it.
For the past 5 days, whenever I attempt to log into the Authenticator app, I consistently receive the error message: “Something went wrong. Please try again.” (screenshot attached for reference).
Due to this issue:
- I am unable to retrieve verification codes from Microsoft Authenticator
- This is blocking access to third-party services that rely on it for two-factor authentication (2FA), including my trading account
Details:
- Device: Oppo K13 (Android)
- Issue duration: 5+ days
- Internet connection: Stable (WiFi & mobile data both tested)
- App reinstall/retry attempts: Completed multiple times (issue persists)
I request your urgent assistance on:
- Restoring access to my Microsoft Authenticator account, OR
- Providing a secure method to recover my 2FA codes or linked accounts
This issue is time-sensitive as it is preventing access to important financial services.
Please guide me with the next steps as soon as possible.
Thank you.

2026-04-28T14:29:33.6866667+00:00 Follow these steps in order on the Oppo device to fix the Microsoft Authenticator issue and regain access to accounts:
- Make sure the basics are correct
- Turn Airplane mode off.
- Switch between Wi‑Fi and mobile data to rule out network issues.
- Confirm the device Date & time are set correctly (automatic time and time zone).
- Update Microsoft Authenticator and Google services
- Open Google Play Store → search for Microsoft Authenticator and install/update to the latest version (Microsoft does not support app versions more than 12 months old).
- In Play Store, also update Google Play Services and Google Play Store.
- Check Authenticator app settings on Android
- Open Microsoft Authenticator → Settings:
- Turn App updates on.
- Turn Turn off battery optimization on for Authenticator.
- Go to Notification settings and ensure Show notifications is enabled.
- Make sure the phone itself allows notifications for Authenticator in Android Settings.
- Open Microsoft Authenticator → Settings:
- Verify device security requirements (especially for work/school or passwordless sign‑in)
- Ensure the device requires a PIN, fingerprint, or face unlock to open.
- If using a Work Profile/Android for Work, enable PIN/biometric for that profile as well.
- Ensure hardware encryption is enabled on the device (see “Encrypt your Android device” in the referenced article if needed).
- In Authenticator → Settings → Device Registration, confirm the account is registered and joined to work/school if applicable; sign in there again if needed.
- Make sure the device is not rooted or jailbroken and is free of malware such as rootkits.
- Fix common “Authentication did not complete”/“Something went wrong” causes
- Ensure the Authenticator app is unlocked when trying to add or use an account.
- Confirm notifications are not set to silent or blocked; otherwise prompts may not appear.
- If the app is still failing, uninstall Authenticator, restart the phone, then reinstall the latest version and try again.
- If sign‑in to Microsoft itself is blocked (codes not arriving or “Try another verification method”)
- Try another verification method already on the account (SMS, alternate email, etc.).
- Try from another network (different Wi‑Fi or mobile data).
- If there are repeated failures or a “Try another verification method” block, wait at least 24 hours without repeated attempts; if still blocked, wait longer (up to a week) before trying again.
- If locked out of a Microsoft 365 work/school tenant as the only admin
- Contact Microsoft Support by phone and request escalation to the Data Protection team to reset the authentication methods for the admin account. Use the global customer service phone numbers listed in the referenced articles and clearly state that you are the only administrator and cannot pass MFA.
- If phone support cannot be reached, create a temporary trial Microsoft 365 tenant, go to its Admin Center, and open a support ticket asking to reach the Data Protection team for the original tenant, providing tenant and admin details.
- For third‑party (non‑Microsoft) accounts using Authenticator
- If the above steps do not restore Authenticator, use each service’s own account‑recovery or 2FA‑reset process (backup codes, email/SMS recovery, or direct support). Microsoft cannot recover 2FA secrets for third‑party services once the app cannot access them.
If, after all steps above, Authenticator still shows “Something went wrong. Please try again” and no alternative verification method works, direct engagement with Microsoft Support (and, for non‑Microsoft services, their respective supports) is required to reset authentication methods.
