To get back into a BitLocker-locked computer, a valid BitLocker recovery key is required. Without it, the drive cannot be unlocked and the data cannot be accessed.
Use these steps in order:
- On the blue BitLocker recovery screen, enter the 48‑digit BitLocker Recovery Key exactly as shown (hyphens are optional). If the key is correct, Windows will start normally.
- If the key is not already available, check all possible locations where it might have been saved:
- Microsoft account (for personal/home devices): sign in at
https://myaccount.microsoft.com, go to Devices, select the affected Windows device, and choose View BitLocker Keys. - Work or school account: recovery keys may be stored in Microsoft Entra ID or in on-premises Active Directory; contact the organization’s IT/helpdesk to retrieve the key.
- Printed copy or written note kept with personal records.
- USB flash drive where the recovery key or recovery password file was saved.
- Microsoft account (for personal/home devices): sign in at
- If the recovery key is found, enter the 48‑digit recovery password on the BitLocker recovery screen to unlock the device.
- After successfully signing in, determine why BitLocker went into recovery (for example, too many wrong PIN attempts, firmware/BIOS changes, or hardware changes) and fix the root cause so it does not happen on every restart. If a PIN was forgotten, reset it from the BitLocker Control Panel after unlocking with the recovery key.
If the recovery key cannot be found in any of the supported locations, the key cannot be recreated or bypassed by anyone, including Microsoft support. In that case, the only option is to erase/reinstall Windows on the drive, which results in loss of the encrypted data.
