My inbox on Outlook keeps having a double header of messages. How do I get back to just one header of any inbox message. I have tried various supposed remedies to no avail. What's next?

    Hi David Freet Sr

I understand your Inbox in Classic Outlook for Windows is showing a “double header” / two-line layout for each message and you want to return to a single-line header. I’m happy to help. Does the double-header happen only in Inbox, or in every mail folder (Sent Items/Deleted Items) too?

Meanwhile, please test out these steps if the AI steps do not help:

    1) Switch the folder back to Compact view

    • Open Inbox
    • Go to View > Change View > Compact

    2) Force the message list to use the compact layout (prevents the “double header” look)

    • Go to View > Current View > View Settings
    • Select Other Settings…
    • Under Use compact layout in widths smaller than…, set it to Always use compact layout (or ensure the compact layout option is enabled).

    3) Turn off preview lines (so each item is truly one line)

Go to View > Message Preview > Off (choose This folder or All mailboxes when prompted).

    4) If the list looks duplicated due to threading, turn off Conversation view

In the Inbox: View > Show as Conversations > Off (pick This folder if prompted).

Please tell me how it goes. If the problem persists, please don’t hesitate to reply to this thread and I will be happy to help. Have a lovely day!

In Outlook, a “double header” view in a folder (including Inbox or Junk) is typically caused by the current sort/grouping setting.

To return to a single header line per message in the affected folder (for example, Junk Email):

    1. Select the folder that shows two lines (e.g., Junk Email).
    2. In the upper-right of the message list, click the current sort option (for example, it may show “By Date”).
    3. In the dropdown, select Date (or the basic sort option without grouping).
    4. The duplicate subject/second line view should clear so each email appears only once.

If the issue is in another folder (like Inbox), repeat the same steps there.
