Several different issues can prevent Word documents from opening. Work through these checks and fixes in order:
- Confirm the file type is supported
On Word for iPhone, only certain formats can be opened and edited. If trying to open files such as .odt, .rtf, .pdf, .xml, .htm, .html, .mht, .mhtml, .txt, or .wps, they will not open in Word for iPhone. Only .docx, .dot, and .dotx open for editing; .doc and .dot open read-only.
- Check if the file is IRM‑protected
If the document is protected with Information Rights Management (IRM), access can fail even when the correct account is used, especially if the content is from another organization that uses Conditional Access. In that case:
- Make sure the correct account (the one the file was shared with) is signed in.
- If the file is from another organization, that organization may need to explicitly invite and provision the account in their tenant before the protected file can be opened.
- Verify that Office is activated and the subscription is valid
If the Microsoft 365 subscription has expired or Office is not activated, documents may open read‑only or not work correctly. Check that the subscription is active and that Word shows as activated. If Word shows Unlicensed Product or activation errors, follow the activation guidance in the referenced article.
- If Word shows an error and “Repair now” does not help
When Word reports an error such as “Word has run into an error that is preventing it from working correctly” and the built‑in Repair now option does not fix it, run an Online Repair of Office instead:
- Close all Office apps.
- Use the Office repair steps in the referenced article to run an Online Repair (this often reinstalls Office).
- Before doing this, confirm that the Office product is associated with the Microsoft account at the services page so it can be reactivated afterward.
- If documents are stored in OneDrive and won’t open
- If Windows shows a “Can’t open file” or “Make sure OneDrive is running” message, start the OneDrive desktop app from Start → search for “OneDrive” → open the OneDrive app, then try opening the document again.
- If OneDrive storage is full, new changes cannot be saved. Check OneDrive storage from the OneDrive icon → Manage storage or by signing in to OneDrive on the web and reviewing used space.
- If opening from OneDrive/SharePoint shows account problems
If an error such as “There is a problem with your account, please try again later” appears when opening documents from OneDrive or SharePoint using the Office client, there may be a profile/registry issue. The documented fix involves editing the registry to remove specific identity cache keys and then restarting the computer. If registry changes are not possible, use Office on the web (Office Online) as a workaround to open and work with the documents.
If none of these steps resolve the issue, use Word on the web (via Microsoft365.com) to confirm whether the documents themselves are intact and accessible, then proceed with Office repair or account troubleshooting as indicated above.
