I have two paints. One says Paint, the one I want to be put the jumplist in. The second Paint is the one that says Paint (classic), which isn't the one I don't want to use.aa3

    Hi unknownshadow,

Thanks for the explanation shared earlier.

As an additional point to consider, it might be worth checking whether the two Paint entries are actually being treated as separate app instances on your system:

    • One entry labeled “Paint” could be the newer app version.
    • The other labeled “Paint (classic)” could be the traditional desktop version.

Based on how Windows handles apps, if they are installed or registered differently, they may behave differently on the taskbar.

You could try this to help narrow it down:

    1. Go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps
    2. Search for Paint
    3. Check whether you see one or more entries listed
    4. If multiple entries appear, you might try uninstalling one of them (only if Windows allows it), then re‑pinning the one you intend to use

Before uninstalling, you might also consider saving or copying any important image files you’ve recently worked on, just in case.

After that, open a few files with that version and check if anything changes with the Jump List.

This won’t guarantee a Jump List will appear, but it can help rule out whether the behavior is related to having multiple Paint variants installed or pinned, or how recent‑item data is being tracked.

Hope this helps point you in the right direction. Feel free to share what you find and we can take a closer look together.

Paint’s Jump List (the menu that appears when right‑clicking its taskbar icon) is controlled entirely by Windows. Applications can only supply destinations or tasks; Windows decides whether and how to show them.

    For Jump Lists in general:

    • Windows automatically shows Recent and Pinned items when there is history for that app.
    • A system‑wide setting controls whether recent items and Jump Lists appear at all. If this is off, apps like Paint will not show a Jump List.
    • The default Jump List is provided by the system; if an app does not customize it, Windows shows recent items only when available.

To have a Jump List for Paint, ensure that:

    1. The Windows setting “Show recommended files in Start, recent files in Explorer, and items in Jump Lists” is turned on (this enables recent items and Jump Lists system‑wide).
    2. Paint has been used to open or create images so that Windows has recent items to display.

If those conditions are met and Windows still does not show a Jump List for the specific Paint variant, there is no supported way to force a Jump List for that app beyond what Windows provides.
