Trying to initiate a support ticket for Microsoft 365 business account

I need to cancel my Microsoft 365 business account. I can't get a username and password to work and therefore can't get into the account either online or by phone. In a previous private conversation on this forum, I was told that the only workaround to get a support ticket initiated is to sign up for a trial subscription of Microsoft 365 Business -- see below. This is unacceptable because my entire problem is that I can't get rid of my first account. Why is Microsoft presenting a "workaround" instead of just helping me with my problem? Is this the way that Microsoft does customer service?

    Hello @365 user

I understand that you would like to cancel your Microsoft subscription. However, I would like to clarify that in this forum, we are not able to perform account actions directly, such as canceling subscriptions or accessing account details.

This forum is designed for discussion and guidance only, where we can suggest steps to help you move forward. In cases like this, the goal is to guide you to the appropriate direction - Microsoft Support Engineering, who can assist you directly.

Due to security and privacy requirements, only Microsoft Support Engineering has access to backend systems and the necessary tools to review your account, help you recover access if needed, assist with the subscription cancellation process, and provide accurate answers once they have verified your information.

I understand it may be frustrating not to receive an immediate resolution here, and I truly appreciate your patience. Please know that our intention in this forum is to support you by providing guidance and next steps so you can reach the right team as efficiently as possible.

However, if you encounter any difficulties while trying to contact Microsoft Support Engineering, feel free to share the details here. I’ll be happy to see if there is any additional guidance I can provide to help you move forward.

    Kind regards,

For a Microsoft 365 business subscription where no sign-in method works and there is no other admin on the tenant, normal self-service cancellation is not possible because Microsoft must first verify administrator identity and ownership of the tenant. That verification and any changes to the tenant (including cancellation) can only be performed by Microsoft support, typically the Data Protection team.

Because access to business support is normally initiated from within an authenticated tenant or via the business support phone system, two supported paths are used in situations like this:

    1. Call Microsoft business support and have a ticket opened for the locked tenant
Use the regional Customer service phone numbers page and call the number for the country/region. When the IVR asks about the issue and product, answer along these lines (from the documented flow):
      • Problem: lost account / authenticator / sign-in issue
      • Product: Office 365 for business / Microsoft 365 for business
      • Account type: company account
      • Are you an administrator: yes
      • Any other administrators: no
      • Do you need a service request: yes
The frontline agent then raises a ticket and routes it to the Data Protection team, who handle identity verification and can help regain access or take action on the tenant.
    2. If phone contact fails, create a temporary trial tenant only as a channel to support
The trial-tenant workaround described in the guidance is not a way to avoid cancelling the original subscription; it is only a supported method to reach business support when phone contact is not working:
      • Sign up for a new Microsoft 365 trial tenant.
      • Go to the Microsoft 365 Admin Center for that new tenant and use Help & support to submit a ticket.
      • In the ticket, clearly state that the issue concerns a different, existing tenant where you are the administrator but cannot sign in, and request escalation to the Data Protection team for that original tenant.
      • After the original-tenant issue is resolved, cancel the trial subscription so it does not renew.

    This approach is used because:

    • Forum moderators and community support cannot access or modify customer tenants or accounts.
    • For security and privacy reasons, Microsoft cannot change or cancel a business tenant without validated proof of admin identity, which is handled only through official support channels (phone or authenticated admin center).

To cancel the original Microsoft 365 business subscription, the Data Protection/support team must first verify identity via one of the two supported contact methods above; once that is done, they can assist with account access or cancellation according to the standard subscription and refund policies.
