In Outlook for Windows, sorting by sender and seeing the sender field usually depends on the view configuration rather than the mail itself. If you cannot sort by email sender or the “From” information is missing, the most common cause is that the message list is not currently showing the correct column set or is using a compact view that hides it.

First, check whether the “From” column is simply not displayed. In the message list, right-click on any column header such as “Subject” or “Received” and choose “View Settings” or “Customize Current View” depending on your version. From there, open “Columns” and ensure “From” is added to the list of displayed fields. If it is missing, add it from the available fields and move it into the visible columns. Once it is present, you should be able to click the “From” header to sort by sender.

If the column is present but sorting still does not work, the view may be grouped in a way that overrides sorting. In that case, go into the View tab and select “View Settings”, then “Group By” and make sure grouping is turned off or not set to something that prevents sorting by sender. Grouping by date or conversation can sometimes hide normal sort behavior.

If you are using the “Compact” or “Single” view, try switching the view style. In the View tab, change the layout or reset the view entirely. You can also reset the entire view with the following command in Outlook’s Run dialog (Windows key + R):

outlook.exe /cleanviews

This will restore default view settings and often fixes missing columns and broken sorting behavior.

If you are in “Focused Inbox”, also check both “Focused” and “Other” tabs, because sorting behavior can appear inconsistent when messages are split across those two categories.

Finally, if this is a Microsoft Exchange or Microsoft 365 account, make sure Outlook is fully synced. Sometimes cached or partially loaded views prevent column sorting until synchronization completes.
