My OneDrive folders are empty? Where have the documents gone and where do I find them to restore?

Hi, I'm John! I will help you with this.

To help narrow down the issue:

    1. Were the files originally saved inside your OneDrive folder, or only on the PC locally?
    2. Also, did this happen after resetting the PC, reinstalling Windows, or restoring OneDrive?

In the meantime, if you haven’t already already, check these places:

    • Sign in to OneDrive web https://onedrive.live.com and see if the files appear there.
    • Check the OneDrive Recycle Bin on the website.
    • Open File Explorer > This PC and check Documents, Pictures, and Desktop outside the OneDrive folder.
    • In OneDrive settings, check if Folder Backup for Documents/Pictures/Desktop was turned off or changed.

Let me know what you find and if you are seeing any error messages or empty folders with cloud icons.

When OneDrive folders look empty after a restore or on the PC, the files are usually either:

    • In the OneDrive online Recycle Bin,
    • In the PC’s Recycle Bin/Trash, or
    • In a different OneDrive account or location than expected.

Work through these steps in order:

    1. Check OneDrive on the web
    1. Go to the OneDrive website and sign in with the same account used on the PC.
    2. Use Search everything at the top of the page and search by:
      • File types (for example: docx, xlsx, jpg),
      • Keywords (for example: "sales", "April", "holiday").

If the files appear in search, they are still in OneDrive but possibly in different folders than expected.

    1. Check the OneDrive Recycle Bin (online)
    1. On the left side of the OneDrive website, select Recycle bin.
    2. Look for missing documents and pictures.
    3. Select the items and choose Restore.
      • Items go back to their original OneDrive locations.

    Notes:

    • For personal accounts, items stay in the OneDrive Recycle Bin for 30 days.
    • For work/school accounts, items are kept up to 93 days unless the admin changed the setting.
    1. Restore deleted files or folders from the PC If the OneDrive folder or files were deleted from the C: drive:
    1. Open Recycle Bin (Windows) or Trash (Mac).
    2. Find the missing OneDrive files or folders.
    3. Right‑click and select Restore (Windows) or Put back (Mac).
      • Files are restored to their original folder locations.

    Notes:

    • Online‑only OneDrive files (placeholders that were never fully downloaded) do not appear in the PC’s Recycle Bin.
    1. Restore the entire OneDrive (if using Microsoft 365) If a large number of files disappeared or were changed:
    1. Open the Restore your OneDrive page (for Microsoft 365 subscribers).
    2. Choose a date within the last 30 days when the files were still present.
    3. Restore.
      • This undoes actions on files and folders within the last 30 days.
      • Files or folders created after the chosen restore point are moved to the OneDrive Recycle Bin and can be restored from there.
    1. Confirm the correct account If nothing appears:
    • Make sure the correct Microsoft account is being used.
    • If multiple accounts exist (personal and work/school), sign out and sign in with each to check for the missing content.

If the files are not in OneDrive search, not in the OneDrive Recycle Bin, and not in the PC’s Recycle Bin/Trash, there is no native Microsoft method in this context to recover them; third‑party recovery tools would be the only remaining option.
