Hi! Let me help you.

If the file itself is marked read-only:

Right-click the document

Select Properties

Under the General tab

Uncheck Read-only

Click Apply → OK

If it turns back on automatically:

Copy the file to your Desktop first

Then try again

Also, check that the file is not inside a protected folder like:

Program Files

OneDrive shared folder

Network location

What is the exact message you see when you try to open the document?

It isn't unusual for Word documents that you have downloaded (from an e-mail, for example) to open in Protected view. To fix that, do the following: Locate the icon for the document (in the Downloads folder, if the doc has been downloaded from a web site or from an e-mail). Right-click the icon and choose Properties. In the Properties window, click Unblock and then click Apply. This will let you open the file normally.

Alternatively, the document could have some type of protection applied to it from within Word.

Word’s built‑in protection cannot be removed without either:

    • the password that was used to protect the document, or
    • being an authenticated owner when “User authentication” protection was applied.

If neither is available, there is no supported way in Microsoft 365/Word to unprotect the document. The only legitimate options are:

    1. Ask the person who protected the document to:
      • Open it in Word.
      • Go to Review > Protect > Restrict Editing.
      • Select Stop Protection.
      • Enter the password (if prompted), then save and resend the unprotected copy.
    2. If the document is only opening as read‑only because of access mode (not Restrict Editing):
      • Go to File > Info.
      • Select Protect Document and clear Always Open Read-Only / Always Open View-Only.
      • Or use the upper‑right drop‑down and switch from Viewing/Reviewing to Editing.

If the file itself is encrypted with a password (prompt appears before the document opens), there is no built‑in bypass. The content would need to be recreated in a new document if the password cannot be recovered. Avoid uploading the file to “password cracking” sites, as they can be scams or privacy risks.

To share a document that others can edit in future, remove protection (with the password) and then save a new, unprotected copy before distributing.
