Copilot history and personalization are tied to the account used to sign in (account identity), not to an email address that can be edited in place. To use Copilot with a different email/work identity while preserving access to past activity, the practical option is to keep using the same underlying Microsoft account (MSA) and adjust which email/identity is primary or used for sign-in, rather than creating or switching to a completely separate account.
Key points from the account model:
- There are two main account types that affect Copilot sign-in:
- Microsoft Account (MSA) – personal account (Outlook, Xbox, Skype, etc.).
- Microsoft Entra ID – work or school account managed by an organization.
- If Copilot is currently used with a personal Microsoft Account (MSA):
- The Copilot history is bound to that MSA.
- Changing to a work Microsoft Entra ID would mean using a different identity; history does not move between MSA and Entra ID.
- What can be changed without losing history:
- For a personal Microsoft Account, the primary alias (the main email shown and used to sign in) can be changed while keeping the same underlying account and its data.
- This is done in the Microsoft account “Manage how you sign in” settings by adding another email address and making it the primary alias. The account (and its Copilot history) remains the same; only the sign-in email changes.
- What cannot be done without losing continuity:
- Copilot history cannot be migrated from a personal Microsoft Account (MSA) to a separate work/school Microsoft Entra ID account.
- Two different identities (one personal, one work) cannot be merged into a single Copilot history.
Practical options:
- If the goal is simply to stop seeing or using a personal email while keeping history:
- Keep using the same personal Microsoft Account for Copilot but change its primary alias to a different email address via the Microsoft account “Manage how you sign in” page. This preserves history because the account itself does not change.
- If the goal is to use Copilot strictly under a work-managed identity:
- Sign in to Copilot with the work Microsoft Entra ID instead. This will start a separate history for the work account; the previous personal history will remain associated with the personal account and will not be transferred.
Because of the separation between Microsoft Account (MSA) and Microsoft Entra ID, preserving existing Copilot history while switching from a personal identity to a work identity is not supported; only alias/primary-email changes within the same account preserve history.
