Good day @Abigail Hayes, and I appreciate the clear explanation of your concern.
Just to gently clarify before we go any further, this is a user‑to‑user support forum. I don’t have the ability to access or investigate individual accounts because this is a user-to-user support forum. Moderators and contributors, including external Microsoft employees, do not have access to internal systems or the ability to directly take action on Microsoft product features. However, I truly hope I can help review your situation, offer some guidance, and support you in finding the right next steps as best as possible.
Based on your description, your account is connected to another organization (tenant) and may still show in Teams until you remove it from your Organizations list or the external admin revokes your guest access.
Here are the steps you can follow:
Option 1: Leave the organization from your account
- Step 1: Try leaving the organization in Teams first
Open Microsoft Teams (desktop or web) > Select the three-dot icon > Go to Settings > Open Accounts and orgs > Leave org.

- Step 3: Sign out of Teams
Open Microsoft Teams (desktop or web) > Select your profile picture at the top right > Choose Sign out.
- Step 4: Leave the organization from My Account portal
Go to: https://myaccount.microsoft.com
Sign in using your old work account.
Select Organizations from the left menu.
Under Other organizations, locate the old organization.
Click Leave organization.
Confirm by selecting Leave
Once completed, your account should no longer be linked to that organization.
- Step 5: Sign back into Teams
Sign back into Microsoft Teams.
Check if the organization is removed.
If it still shows briefly, sign out and sign in again to refresh changes.
Option 2: If the “Leave organization” option is not available
In some cases, you may be unable to leave the organization yourself, such as when the organization restricts exits, your guest account is disabled, or the tenant is no longer actively managed.
Normally, the organization’s administrator would need to remove your account.
Since the organization no longer exists, this option is unfortunately unavailable; however, you can try the following workarounds, which won’t fully remove the connection from Microsoft’s system but may help reduce its visibility and inconvenience:
- Step 1: Turn off notifications for that organization
Open Microsoft Teams > Click three-dot icon > Select Settings > Go to Accounts and orgs > Find the old organization > Turn off notifications for it.

- Step 2: Clean up local device traces
This helps remove cached data on your device.
1/ Clear Teams cache
This article provides further guidance on the topic: Clear the Teams client cache - Microsoft Teams | Microsoft Learn
2/ Remove the old account from Windows settings
Open Settings on your device.
First, go to Access work or school, check for the old work account and disconnect it if it appears.
Next, go to Email & accounts and remove the old account if it is listed.

Then, reset your device.
Note: This only removes local traces on your device. The organization may still appear again after signing in because the association is stored on Microsoft servers.
I’m sorry this isn’t the outcome you were hoping for, I understand the inconvenience, but due to security and governance settings, some tenants can block self-service removal, meaning you may not be able to leave without their approval, even if the tenant is no longer active.
I hope this information is helpful. If you have any questions or need further support, please don’t hesitate to reach out at any time.
Thank you for your patience and understanding.
