    Hi Tim Taylor,

First, please do a Reboot (not Shutdown) your computer.

If the problem persists, please check if there's a new Windows update recently and try to uninstall it to see if the problem can be resolved.

Please try uninstalling it following this article: How to uninstall a Windows Update then if it works, please pause Windows Update.

If you have any updated information, please feel free to let me know.

Right click your Start Button and open Device Manager.

Expand the 'Sound, Video and Game Controllers' section.

Please provide a screenshot of that full Device Manager window.

    2

Click your Start Button, then just type msinfo and press Enter, please provide a screenshot of the resulting System Information window.

Try these steps in order on the Windows 11 laptop. After each step, test the sound (for example, play a CNN video) before moving on.

    1. Check the speaker icon and volume
    • Look at the bottom-right of the screen for the small speaker icon.
    • Click it once.
    • Make sure the volume slider is not at 0. Drag it to the right (about halfway).
    • Make sure there is no “x” or mute symbol on the speaker. If there is, click it to unmute.
    1. Make sure the right speakers are selected
    2. Click the speaker icon again.
    3. Next to the volume slider, click the small arrow (>) to see the list of audio devices.
    4. Click the entry that looks like “Speakers” or “Speakers (Realtek…)” or similar (not a TV, monitor, or Bluetooth device).
    5. Try sound again.
    6. Check cables and headphones
    • If headphones or external speakers are plugged in, unplug them and try again.
    • If using USB speakers or headphones, unplug them and plug them into a different USB port.
    1. Check that nothing is muted in the Volume mixer
    2. Right-click the speaker icon on the taskbar.
    3. Select “Open Volume mixer”.
    4. Look at all the sliders (System, your browser, apps). Make sure none show a red circle with a line through it. If they do, click to unmute.
    5. Make sure the sliders are turned up.
    6. Set the default audio device
    7. Select Start > Settings > System > Sound.
    8. Under “Output”, click the device that should play sound (usually “Speakers”). Selecting it sets it as the default.
    9. Try sound again.
    10. Run the audio troubleshooter
    11. Select Start > Settings > System.
    12. Scroll down and select “Troubleshoot” > “Other troubleshooters”.
    13. Find “Audio” and click “Run”.
    14. Follow the on-screen steps and apply any fixes it suggests.
    15. Check for Windows updates
    16. Select Start > Settings > Windows Update.
    17. Click “Check for updates”.
    18. Install any updates it finds.
    19. Restart the laptop and test sound again.

If none of these steps restore sound, the problem may be with the audio driver or the laptop hardware. In that case, ask a trusted person to help follow the “Update or reinstall audio drivers” steps in Device Manager, or contact the laptop maker’s support.
