Have office home and student on two computers, one Windows 10 and one Windows 11.

Neither will open Office.

Retail versions of Office cover only one computer. Unless you purchased 2 copies, you'll have to uninstall on one of your computers.

The best first option is to perform a full repair of your Office installation.

Open the Settings App (gear icon on your Start Menu)

Go to Apps - Installed apps, then scroll down to find Microsoft Office

Select that and choose Modify - Online Repair

That should fix any issues with your Office Installation.

If that does not resolve the problem, please provide a screenshot of any error you see when you try to use the Office apps.

Try the following steps on each computer in order.

    1. Confirm Office is installed and start it from Start
      • Select Start and begin typing an app name such as Word or Excel.
      • If it appears, select it to try to open it.
      • If shortcuts are missing, scroll the Start menu list to the Office app names. If still missing, proceed to repair.
    2. Run an Online Repair of Office
      • On Windows 10 or 11, right‑click the Start button and select Apps and Features (Windows 10) or Installed apps (Windows 11).
      • Find the Microsoft Office (Home and Student) product, select it, then choose Modify.
      • When prompted how to repair Office, choose Online Repair > Repair to fully fix the installation, then follow the on‑screen steps.
      • After the repair completes, restart the PC and try opening Word/Excel again.
    3. If Office still will not open
      • If there are multiple Office versions installed, remove the ones not in use:
        • Open Control PanelPrograms and Features.
        • Search for office in the upper‑right search box.
        • If more than one Office version is listed, right‑click the one not needed and select Uninstall, then restart and try Office again.
      • If Office still fails to open after that, completely uninstall and reinstall Office:
        • Use the uninstall troubleshooter from the article “"Unable to start Office" or ”Office is busy” error message” to fully remove Office, then reinstall Office Home and Student from the Microsoft account.

If none of these steps resolve the issue on either PC, contact Microsoft Support for remote assistance, as in similar resolved cases support used specialized uninstall tools and then reinstalled Office to fix a corrupted installation.
