How do I disable processing changes in one drive (Win 11.
It keeps processing changes over and over again.

I can't seem to find the online only option even in the settings.

Thanks

I suggest you set OneDrive to start automatically when you log in to your computer.

To avoid "Processing changes", I use Files On-Demand with most of my files freed up. But I also make periodic backups to a local external drive just in case I should ever lose access to my account.

You can free up all your files by going to OneDrive settings > Sync and backup > Advanced settings, then scroll down to Free up disk space.

You can keep your files freed up in Storage Sense: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9yKbOxn4E0A

processing changes starts over and over again though. How many times does it need to process changes even if there are no changes.

"Processing changes" in OneDrive cannot be disabled because it indicates that the sync client is actively scanning and syncing files. However, it can be minimized or resolved by addressing the common causes and by using Files On-Demand (online-only files) so fewer local changes need to be processed.

    1. Check common causes of endless "Processing changes"
      • Make sure there are no OneDrive files still open. Close any Office documents, PST/OST files, videos, ZIPs, or other large files stored in OneDrive.
      • If a very large file (for example, a long video, large ZIP, or Outlook PST/OST) is in a synced OneDrive folder, move it out of OneDrive or exclude that folder from sync. Large files can keep OneDrive in "Processing changes" for a long time.
      • If many files were recently added or changed, OneDrive may legitimately need a long time to finish. In that case, let it run; no action is required.
      • Confirm that the account is signed in. If the password was changed, sign in again in OneDrive settings.
If the status remains stuck after these checks, unlinking and re-linking the account is recommended (see the "Unlink and re-link OneDrive" article referenced in the context).
    2. Use Files On-Demand (online-only files) Files On-Demand does not turn off processing, but it reduces local disk activity and the number of files that need to be fully present on the device. To turn on Files On-Demand in Windows 11:
      1. Select the OneDrive cloud icon in the notification area.
      2. Select the OneDrive Help and Settings icon, then Settings.
      3. Go to Sync and back upAdvanced settings.
      4. Turn on Files On-Demand (or select Save space and download files as you use them if that option is shown).
      After this:
      • Files with a blue cloud icon are online-only and do not take local space.
      • Opening an online-only file downloads it and makes it locally available.
      • Right-click a locally available file and choose Free up space to make it online-only again.
      • Files marked Always keep on this device (green circle with white check) will stay local and always be synced.
    3. If "Processing changes" still never clears
      • Check for unknown/hidden or temporary files in the OneDrive folders that might be blocking sync. Use the OneDrive cloud icon menu to see which files are currently syncing or stuck.
      • If it remains stuck, follow the guidance to unlink and re-link OneDrive to reset the sync relationship.

There is no supported way to turn off the "Processing changes" phase itself; the practical approach is to reduce what needs to be synced (large files, unnecessary local copies) and ensure Files On-Demand is enabled so most content stays online-only.
