We can't sign you in right now

Microsoft Edge sign in requires the latest version of Internet Explorer to be installed on this device. Please install Internet Explorer 11 from https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=2118167 and try signing in again.

I keep getting this error and have not been able to find a way around it.

I mean really, why do i still need to have IE 11 installed, c'mon Microsoft this is ridiculous and totally stupid.

How can I resolve this issue?

    Thanks for your patience!

The team has looked into this issue and determined this is related to Compatibility mode. On Windows 10 if Edge is configured to run in Compatibility mode as Windows 8, you will see this error. This is not a supported configuration to run Edge on Windows 10.

The fix for this is to turn Compatibility mode off (right click on Edge from the File Explorer > Properties > Compatibility tab > Uncheck "Run the program in compatibility mode for:")

    Hi Dan

Thanks for trying to help but I have already installed the latest ie 11 and already have Edge working but am not able to sign in  to Edge without the above mentioned error.

I have opened IE 11 and signed in but still am not able to sign in to Edge.

    So frustrating.

... why do i still need to have IE 11 installed, c'mon Microsoft this is ridiculous and totally stupid.

Internet Explorer is much more than a web browser; it also provides all sorts of functionality for Windows and Windows programs, which is why it's not easy to uninstall and why doing so anyway will cause all sorts of problems unrelated to web browsing. You can hide the web browser and bring it back again using by running optionalfeatures.exe.

I don't know why MSA authentication requires IE, but the error message you're seeing seems to suggest that that is indeed the case. Is the Microsoft Account Sign-in Assistant service running? I don't know whether this service is essential to the Edge sign-in process, but it might be.
