Does Windows 11 support FireWire 1394?

Hi

I trying to get some Digital8 video tapes from my Sony DCR TRV725E to my PC where i've installed a FireWire PCi interface.

Microsoft ClimpChamp does not recognize the camera. I hear a 'ding' when connected and it shows up in the device manager and it also show up in ClimpChamp but then tells me its busy by another application, but it does not tell which and I tried to close all other applications without luck. How do I find out which application??

It's detected fine in Discord and also im able to use WinDV to create AVI ( http://windv.mourek.cz/).

The ClimpChamp online support confirm that they support FireWire (I do not see it stated in their documentation though. when I told them that the camra did not work in Microsoft Teams either they asked me to contact Microsoft Teams support... I haven't done that yet and I do not know if Microsoft Teams support FireWire??

Hi. I have a PC I use for my home studio using two audio interfaces installed on my Win 11 PC. One uses a FW ASIO Driver and the other uses a USB B ASIO Driver. Yes, I understand you are asking about using FW for video needs, but I think these two needs, audio and video, have a common FW solution. It's the '1394 OHCI Compliant Host Controller (Legacy)' program that Windows offers. The version I have on my PC was installed 9/17/2021, it's size is 275KB and the version is 0.0.1.

And, as is mentioned here, I think this may only support FW400. However, as I have been told, FW800 will adapt to a FW400 connection.

Also, I want to share that I am running the latest WIN11 update (as of 2/16/2024), and, although my Mackie 1640i FW interface is dated tech, (2010), it is suddenly capable of less latency than it ever was before. I'm rather dumbfounded to discover this. However, even with the LAST Mackie ASIO driver ever produced for it, (2012 I think), suddenly it is keeping up with my MOTU M6 USB B ASIO Driver equipped interface. The DAC chip in the Mackie is not as 'good' as the MOTU convertor, but the Mackie is still a workhorse and performing with less latency than it ever has. My DAWs are Cubase 13 and WaveLab 12 Pro, btw. Ha, I am actually responding here to see if MS can explain my reduced FW latency. Well?

I’m sorry that you are experiencing this issue. Windows 11 does not support FireWire 1394 devices as designed. PreSonus has discontinued support for device drivers for FireWire products in Windows OS due to Windows 11 operating system changes that prevent the device drivers for FireWire products from functioning as designed.

You can use the Legacy IEEE 1394 Firewire drivers that came with Windows, which might help. Refer to the below link.

I've seen ina few places that windows 11 only supports FireWire 800 cards. The old 400 cards don't work.

Hi Mostafa

In fact i hear a ding and it works with WinDV but when the camra is selcted in ClipChamp it tells me that i busy in antoher application but i do not no which as i beleive i have closed every other application that could take up the ressource.

When I read her https://www.studio1productions.com/Articles/Firewire-1.htm it tells me NOT to use the legacy driver!? (I have tried without succes).

I did chat with ClipChamp support yesterday and they did confirm that FireWire should work but i’m not sure if the answer is correct!?… I told her that it did not work with Microsoft Teams either and then she asked me to contact Teams support… but i do not kow if Teams support FireWire cameras at all…
