I'm trying to join my daughter's account to my family group - but she is already in some other family group that I cannot leave. She is minor - and there's no sych a menu as 'Leave family group'. What can we do?

    Hi Andriy Kirmas,

Please kindly note that this is a public community forum, I do not have the ability, tools to unblock, recover accounts or bypass security. Only Microsoft’s official recovery process can restore access.

I understand how frustrating this is, especially since child accounts don’t have a “Leave family group” option.

Have you already tried the Q&A Assist suggestions? In addition, please answer quick question to help guide further:

    • Do you recognize the organizer account shown in your daughter’s family group, or does it look unfamiliar?

In the meantime, please try the following:

1, Check who the current organizer is (from the child account)

Have your daughter sign in here: https://family.microsoft.com

    • Open her profile
    • Look for family members listed
    • Identify which adult account is managing her

    Sometimes the organizer might be:

    • Another parent/guardian
    • An older account you no longer use
    • An account created during device setup

2, If the organizer account is known but inaccessible

Try to recover that organizer account first:

    • Go to: https://account.live.com/acsr
    • Enter your locked out email and an alternate email where Microsoft can contact you.
    • Provide as many accurate details as possible, such as old passwords, frequent contacts/subject lines and submit from a familiar device/location.
    • Wait 24–72 hours for a response. You may refine and resubmit up to twice per day.
    • Please see this official guide to help you fill out the form more accurately: Help with the Microsoft account recovery form - Microsoft Support

Once access is restored, the organizer can remove the child from that family.

3, If you don’t recognize the family group at all

This can happen if the child account was previously added elsewhere. In this case, you can contact Microsoft support for Family Safety:

    • Visit  Contact Us - Microsoft Support
    • Select the product or service you're having issue with.
    • Click  Get Home Support
    • Type a brief description of your issue in the search box.
    • Click Get Help  and select  Contact Support  below.
    • Go to the Products and services tab, and choose the appropriate product.
    • On the Category tab, choose the appropriate category or an alternative option.
    • Go to  Confirm.
    • Look for and select "Chat with a support agent in your web browser" (during business hours) if available. Explain your situation clearly.

Because a Microsoft account can only be in one family group at a time, the existing family membership must be removed before the child can join a new group.

For a child account, there is no Leave family group option; only an organizer (adult) of the current family group can remove the child:

    1. The adult who currently manages the child’s account must sign in at family.microsoft.com with their organizer account.
    2. They select the child’s profile.
    3. They choose Remove consent for this child's account (if shown).
    4. They go back to the family group and select Remove from family group to complete removal.

Once the child has been removed from that family group, the child can be added to the new family group:

    1. Sign in to your own family group at family.microsoft.com using an organizer account.
    2. Select Add a family member.
    3. Enter the child’s email address, choose Member, and send the invite.
    4. Have the child sign in and accept the invitation to join your family group.

If the current organizer cannot access their account, they (or the appropriate guardian) must first attempt to recover that organizer account before they can remove the child from the existing family group.
