A Microsoft app for iOS and Android devices that enables authentication with two-factor verification, phone sign-in, and code generation
Follow these steps to connect Microsoft Authenticator to a Microsoft account and get OTP codes to appear.
- Install and open Microsoft Authenticator
- Download and install the Microsoft Authenticator app from your app store.
- Open the app and allow any required permissions (camera, notifications, etc.).
- Add the Microsoft account in Authenticator
- In the Authenticator app, tap the + icon.
- Select Personal account (for Outlook/Hotmail/Live/Xbox, etc.) or the appropriate work/school option.
- Choose Scan a QR code.
- Generate the QR code from the Microsoft account security page
- On a computer or browser, go to the Security tab of the Microsoft account: https://account.microsoft.com/security and sign in.
- Select Manage how I sign in to show the ways to prove identity.
- Select Add a new way to sign in or verify.
- Choose Use an app.
- If Authenticator is not installed, select Get it now; if it is installed, select Set up a different Authenticator app, then Next to show the QR code.
- Link the app with the QR code
- Point the phone’s camera (from the Authenticator app) at the QR code on the screen.
- The account should now appear in the Authenticator app.
- Tap the account entry; a One-time password code (6‑digit OTP) should be visible and will refresh every 30 seconds.
- Use Authenticator as a sign-in method
- Back on the Microsoft account Security page, complete any verification steps.
- Optionally, in the Two-step verification section, turn it On and follow the instructions to make Authenticator a required method.
If the app shows only an account name and no “One-time password code” line at all (no OTP visible when tapping the account), and the account was already added, this can indicate a back-end configuration issue. In that case, contact Microsoft support and ask for a ticket with the Data Protection team to reset MFA for the account, as they can verify identity and clear the existing Authenticator registration so it can be set up again.
If an “Authentication did not complete” message appears when trying to approve sign-in:
- Make sure the Authenticator app is unlocked.
- Ensure notifications are enabled and not silent for Authenticator.
- Update to the latest version of the app.
- Check that the phone has a working internet connection and correct date/time.
